Kerrigan Not Taking Part in OTAs, Should Return Soon
Tuesday, May 26
Tarik El-Bashir of CSNWashington.com reported that Kerrigan was not taking part in OTAs. Brian McNally of 106.7 FM reported that head coach Jay Gruden said the linebacker would return soon.
On May 20, El-Bashir reported that Kerrigan underwent arthroscopic knee surgery because he battled "soreness and discomfort in the knee for some time."
That is great news for Washington because Kerrigan is a defensive force on the field. He tallied career highs in sacks (13.5) and forced fumbles in 2014 (five) and theoretically still has plenty of productive seasons ahead at 26 years old. Any physical setback is reason for concern, although the fact that this comes during the offseason with plenty of recovery time is reassuring.
Washington must deal with Tony Romo and the Dallas Cowboys, Eli Manning and the New York Giants and Chip Kelly's fast-paced Philadelphia Eagles offense within its own division. It is difficult to envision a formidable season from the defense without a healthy Kerrigan.
Kerrigan's health is important for more than just his on-field production.
He hopes to take on more of a leadership role this season after a breakout 2014 campaign, and being on the field and leading by example will help him do just that.
Kerrigan now has the opportunity to teach from the sidelines until he is healed. Fortunately for Washington, he should be back relatively soon, ready to lead by example and in the stat sheet.
