Analyzing New York Jets' Best Trade Options with 6th Pick in NFL Draft
With a brand-new head coach and a brand-new general manager, the (brand-) New York Jets enter a brand-new regime with a brand-new vision.
Sounds like the refrain to a Rhymefest hit (NSFW).
The 2015 NFL draft presents plenty of opportunities for the Jets to build in the direction they see fit, and the No. 6 overall pick could be a great bargaining chip in that process.
The Jets could choose to trade up a few spots if they want to land one of the draft's top quarterbacks, or they could trade down if they want to build their roster with depth in a way the previous two general managers have been unable to do.
Who knows at this point, but the possibilities are endless. With help from ProFootballTalk.com's draft pick value chart, let's take a look at some of those possibilities.
6th Overall Pick for 13th and 44th Overall Picks from New Orleans Saints
1 of 5
Since 2011, the New Orleans Saints have alternated between winning and losing seasons. The 2014 season marked the second 7-9 season in the past three years, and it may be time for the Saints to take drastic measures in their roster development.
With the 13th (1,150 points) and 44th (460 points) picks exceeding the value of the sixth pick (1,600) by 10 points, the value matchup on this trade is nearly perfect. The Jets and Saints have not been draft-day trade bedfellows in the past, but nothing is to stop that from changing.
If the quarterbacks have already been taken off the board, the Jets could use the opportunity to add multiple picks and help build their roster with regards to depth, where they have been lacking for years.
6th Overall Pick for 8th and 73rd Overall Picks from Atlanta Falcons
2 of 5
This trade would not be much of a needle-mover, with the Jets moving down only two spots in exchange for an extra third-round pick. That being said, if both Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston and Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota are off the board, the Jets could certainly explore options for adding more picks.
The Atlanta Falcons suffered a second straight losing season, and are in the throes of a small-scale regime change of their own, with new head coach Dan Quinn coming over from the Seattle Seahawks while general manager Thomas Dimitroff remains in the same position.
If there is a prospect the Falcons particularly like that has fallen out of the top five, they would be wise to pull the trigger on this trade to ensure that neither the Jets nor the Chicago Bears can snatch that player up before the Falcons go on the clock.
6th and 70th Overall Picks for 4th Pick from Oakland Raiders
3 of 5
Maybe the Oakland Raiders are tired of picking in the top five of the draft on such a consistent basis. They've had a selection within the first five picks of the draft in three of the past six years, and 2015 will make it 4-for-7.
With more than $60 million in cap space last offseason, the Raiders went on a Blank Check-style spending spree and snatched up a lot of veteran talent. It may not be much, but the Raiders could move down two picks and add an extra third-round pick for their troubles.
The Jets, on the other hand, could use the opportunity to move into the top five to help them land one of the top two quarterbacks in Winston or Mariota.
6th, 37th and 101st Overall Picks for 3rd Overall Pick from Jacksonville Jaguars
4 of 5
The Jacksonville Jaguars probably aren't in the market for one of the top quarterbacks in the draft since they spent the No. 3 overall pick on Blake Bortles in 2014. With that being said, any quarterback-needy teams will surely be picking up the phone to talk to Jaguars head coach Gus Bradley, owner Shad Khan and general manager Dave Caldwell.
At a combined value of 2,226 points, The Jets' first-, second- and fourth-round picks would be only 26 points more than the Jaguars' pick, which is valued at 2,200 points. That seems like fair value, especially considering the player(s) the Jets would probably be aiming to land with the pick.
Depending on how you look at the Jets' needs this offseason, this trade would either be the best of the best or the worst of the worst possibilities. If you think the Jets need to build depth, you probably cringed at the sight of this trade. If you think they need a quarterback above all else and should do whatever it takes to land one of the draft's top two passers, you probably love the idea.
6th Overall Pick for 14th, 47th and 111th Picks from Miami Dolphins
5 of 5
Would two division rivals really be draft-day trade bedfellows? It's hard to believe, but not entirely impossible. The Washington Redskins and Dallas Cowboys were trade partners just last year, when Washington sent the 34th pick to Dallas for the 47th and 78th picks.
In this case, it would take a king's ransom for the Dolphins to move up into the top 10, and that would allow the Jets to acquire a second- and fourth-round pick to help them build the depth on their roster.
It would take a desperate Dolphins team to pull the trigger on this trade, but with the seats heating up in South Beach, it makes sense that the Dolphins may get a little trigger-happy on draft day.
