Marshawn Lynch Not on the Trade Block?
The Seattle Seahawks are defending Super Bowl champions, but there is trouble in paradise in regard to running back Marshawn Lynch. After the team traded away wide receiver Percy Harvin, the rumors of a possible deal including Lynch started picking up steam.
According to Chris Mortensen of ESPN, the Seahawks are not likely to trade Lynch, but his time in Seattle is likely coming to an end following this season:
"Seattle Seahawks running back Marshawn Lynch is not on the trading block, but many in the organization -- including Lynch -- do not expect the running back to be on the roster in 2015, according to sources.
The organization has grown tired of his ways, including pulling a no-show at the White House Super Bowl ceremony, his training camp holdout and his possible contribution to locker-room distractions.
"
The rift between the coaching staff and Lynch should be obvious after the way the team has underutilized the running back. Lynch is one of the most violent runners in the league but has only surpassed 100 yards rushing once this season and only carried the ball 111 times through seven games.
Seattle won the Super Bowl with an offense predicated on the run, but the game plan has deviated from that this season, leaning more on quarterback Russell Wilson and the passing game thus far.
Add in the fact that Lynch has been excluded from the passing attack over the last several weeks as well, and it is understandable why the talented back is disgruntled. While he may not be traded, Lynch’s time with the Seahawks is almost over.
New England Looking for a Running Back?
The New England Patriots are still recovering from the season-ending knee injury to starting running back Stevan Ridley, and the franchise may be kicking tires on possible trade options before the deadline.
In a report from Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk.com, he claims, “Per a league source, the Pats and coach Bill Belichick are looking for a running back.”
While the Patriots have found success with Shane Vereen as the passing-down back, New England needs a back who can run the ball between the tackles. Jonas Gray had a strong performance in Week 8, but the franchise needs more talent at the position.
One possible option is Tampa Bay running back Doug Martin.
According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, “Teams have already approached Tampa Bay about Martin, and some around the league believe that the Buccaneers would be willing to deal him for the right price before Tuesday's 4 p.m. ET trade deadline, according to sources.”
Martin injured his ankle on Sunday against the Vikings and did not return to the game, but New England should see the long-term potential of adding a young player with as much upside as Martin.
In a system that fits his style and under the tutelage of a coaching staff that actually wants him on the roster, there is little doubt that Martin could return to the elite form he had as a rookie. The Patriots would be even more dangerous with a back like Martin in the mix.
Tampa Bay Listening to Offers for Vincent Jackson?
Martin may not be the only member of the Buccaneers traded before the deadline. Rumors have been swirling about the availability of Tampa Bay wide receiver Vincent Jackson as well.
According to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, Tampa Bay is fielding calls for the receiver:
In a separate report from Rapoport, there are at least four teams that have expressed interest in Jackson:
Despite only having one catch for 13 yards Sunday against the Vikings, Jackson is still one of the most dangerous receivers in the game. The 31-year-old may not have many years left, but with a 6’5” frame and the experience to make any team instantly better, any franchise in postseason contention should be intrigued by a possible deal for Jackson.
For organizations like Philadelphia and New England, adding a player with the raw talent and skill of Jackson would catapult each team into the conversation as Super Bowl favorites. If the asking price isn’t out of control, Jackson would be a blockbuster addition at the deadline.
