Liverpool v Swansea

Both the Reds and Swans have struggled of late, adding an element of intrigue to Tuesday's marquee matchup. The hosts are coming off a disappointing goalless draw against Hull City—the visitors snapped a winless streak that started after their third-round win over Everton.
Raheem Sterling's 2014-15 campaign has firmly established the youngster as the biggest talent in English football, but on those rare occasions where he struggles, Liverpool look toothless.
Mario Balotelli is yet to find his scoring boots in Premier League action, and the Italian has faced a mountain of criticism. Teammate Martin Skrtel told reporters the squad is firmly in his corner, however, via Goal's Matthew Scott:
"He is working hard and showed some good moments. Unfortunately we couldn't score the goal. I feel sorry for him.
"
He is working hard in training, he is working hard in the game. He just hasn't got the goals. We just believe in him. We will be supporting him and just hope he will start scoring.
The Swans snapped their winless streak by recording a rather unconvincing 2-0 win over Leicester City, but the Welsh side will have been eyeing the fixture at Anfield, as they attempt to find success again in the tournament they won in 2013.
Gary Monk and his squad have enjoyed a fine Premier League season so far, but no one is expecting them to finish in the top six. Cup glory is a possibility, however, and perhaps more important at this stage of the campaign. He told reporters what an opportunity it is to play at Anfield, via the International Business Times' Naveen Ullal:
"It's one that we're really excited about - we go up there with nothing to lose. Anfield's always a special place to play and we did well in the cup game that we played there before. Hopefully we can take that sort of performance [against Leicester] up there but it's one that we'll go up and enjoy. Liverpool will obviously be favourites but hopefully we can put a performance on that will make everyone proud.
"
Rickie Lambert might receive the start for the hosts in favour of the out-of-form Balotelli, while Wilfried Bony will look to build on the two-goal performance he put in against Leicester.
Manchester City v Newcastle United

Somehow, Alan Pardew still finds himself in charge of Newcastle. And somehow, after a disastrous start to the season, the Magpies have won two in a row and no longer find themselves in the relegation spots.
Even ESPN FC are having trouble comprehending the situation:
Two weeks ago, this fixture may have looked like the biggest mismatch of the round, despite the presence of six teams from the lower leagues. Newcastle looked that bad, and the hosts looked that good.
But Manchester City have since suffered a shock loss at the hands of West Ham United, looking lethargic in the process, while the Magpies are surging. Are Pardew and company suddenly favourites in this match? No, but with little pressure, an upset could be in the making.
The Citizens already chase Chelsea by six points and will host Manchester United on Sunday, and perhaps one or two players will be caught looking ahead to that fixture rather than their meeting with Newcastle.
City's James Milner, a former Magpie, told the club's official website he believes the visitors are "hungry for success:"
"The bottom line is that I had good time at Newcastle and they are a big club who are desperate for success.
Maybe I’ve taken the brunt of one of two of the fans’ frustrations because I’ve been fortunate enough to win one or two trophies and unfortunately Newcastle haven’t but St James’ Park is a great place to play football and hopefully the club will have some success at some point.
"
That mentality hasn't ruled at St. James' Park this season, however. Newcastle have the feel of an underachieving mid-table side with an out-of-favour manager and fans are in no way counting on Capital One Cup glory.
The pressure will be on the hosts to perform—the Magpies are expected to lose, anyway. City will be favourites going into this match, but no fixture seems to have more upset-potential written all over it than this one.
