Ranking the 10 Best Transfers Around Europe After the 2026 Summer Transfer Window

After the close of the transfer window on Tuesday, we can now look back on all the deals to find the very best.

This isn't simply a matter of buying the most expensive players (although, spoiler alert, a few of them are here). There are many factors to consider, with value, timing and positional need chief among them. Perhaps most importantly, a transfer just has to feel right, and these 10 meet the criteria.

While there is no shame in missing out, to give an example of why certain deals didn't make it, we'll take the most expensive player not on the list: Bradley Barcola. 

The Frenchman is a good player and should be a positive addition for Liverpool, but the $145 million fee is high for a player whose best work so far in his career has come as an impact substitute. In terms of positional need, too, Liverpool arguably needed more of an upgrade on the right side of their attack rather than the left side that Barcola will likely occupy.

10. Kang-in Lee

Kang-in Lee failed to become a regular starter for Paris Saint-Germain in his three years with the two-time European champions, but the 25-year-old still feels like a talent worth betting on. For under $50 million, Atletico Madrid are likely to get a strong return on their investment.

The South Korean has featured as more of a central forward under Diego Simeone so far, although that could change with Julian Alvarez now staying in the Spanish capital. Even so, Lee's busy style should mesh well with Atleti, where hard running is a non-negotiable. 

Lee isn't just a worker, though. As Thom Harris pointed out for The Athletic, he stands out as a creative force and all-around in-possession player: "Only Ousmane Dembele and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia were involved in more sequences leading to shots per 90 minutes last season, while only Ballon d'Or winner Dembele could better his rate of 3.3 chances created per game."

It is, of course, easier to flash these skills in the best team in Europe, particularly when most of your minutes come against overmatched Ligue 1 opponents. But Lee was also previously an undeniable attacking force in Spain for Mallorca, registering 12 goal contributions in the season prior to his move to Paris.

While this is perhaps the biggest projection on this list given Lee's struggles for significant minutes for PSG, there's plenty of reason to believe his energy, versatility and creativity can help take Atletico to another level.

9. Donyell Malen

After joining Roma on loan in January last season, Donyell Malen scored 14 goals in 18 games to propel his new team into the top three of Serie A.

The deal unsurprisingly was swiftly confirmed as having been made permanent. And if your club was able to sign a player you know fits perfectly and scores at close to a goal-per-game pace for around $30 million, you'd be pretty keen to make it happen too. 

The 27-year-old Dutch forward is in the most prolific form of his career in top-five European football, but he's also finally featuring consistently as a central striker rather than being pushed out wide, as he was for Borussia Dortmund before performing largely as a backup for Aston Villa. 

It certainly doesn't hurt the perception of this deal that Malen has already scored five Serie A goals after just two games. While Inter Milan will be favourites to retain their crown, the field behind them is wide open. Malen's addition puts Roma in as strong a position as anyone else to potentially mount a title charge, which is well worth such a reasonable fee.

8. Morgan Rogers

If a transfer is enough to put your attack among the Premier League's best, you pay what it takes to make it happen. Chelsea's $158 million deal for Morgan Rogers stretches the definition of "value" to its limit, but when you combine his individual ability with the positive impact the 24-year-old could have on Cole Palmer, it starts to make more sense.

Palmer's Premier League goal contributions fell from 56 over his first two seasons with Chelsea to just 11 last season. Injuries contributed to those struggles, but Palmer also needed more support. After João Pedro, the Blues' minutes leaders in attack last year were Pedro Neto and Alejandro Garnacho.

Neto is a useful Premier League forward who has reached double figures for goal contributions in each of his last three seasons, and to give Garnacho his due credit as well, he does exist.

Rogers is simply a different caliber of player with 34 combined goals and assists in his last two seasons, and his ability to create goals out of nothing makes him a worthy investment.

7. Mamadou Sangaré

Mamadou Sangaré's move to Brentford more than fulfills every one of our criteria. By the end of the season, there will likely be several clubs questioning their midfield recruitment, and the 24-year-old Malian will be a major reason why.

We've seen multiple deals for midfielders around or above the $100 million mark this summer. While the likes of Matheus Fernandes, Sandro Tonali and Elliot Anderson are all fine players, it's difficult to argue that those deals made enough of a difference to those teams' outlooks to warrant that level of spending.

With such players out of their reach, Brentford instead found a physical standout in Sangaré who perfectly fits how they want to play, and paid around $55 million to get him.

Sangaré's ability to force turnovers and then quickly start attacks could have a transformative effect for a Brentford team on the rise. It is a club-record deal for the Bees, but it already looks likely that they'll be able to make that back and more in a year or two after Sangaré potentially helps them to European qualification.

6. Maxence Lacroix

Chelsea desperately needed a centre-back this summer. Last season, Trevoh Chalobah was relied upon far too much in playing 2,783 Premier League minutes and became over-exposed, while Wesley Fofana and Tosin Adarabioyo struggled to find any level of consistency.

With new manager Xabi Alonso opting to play a back three, that need became even more pressing. For just over $70 million, they added a 26-year-old France international with two years of Premier League experience.

The value is strong when you consider that Brighton & Hove Albion and Liverpool paid similar fees for Luka Vuskovic and Jeremy Jacquet, two young players whose development will be more than successful if they become as good as Lacroix.

Lacroix's biggest selling point is his athleticism. At 6'3", the Frenchman is one of the fastest defenders in the league, making him a formidable 1v1 defender. That should allow Alonso to supercharge his team's intensity while knowing that Lacroix is able to cover the large spaces that get left behind by such an approach.

In a strong summer for Chelsea, this was another deal that moved them into position to contend for the top four and perhaps more.

5. Bruno Guimarães

Arsenal clearly wanted to make a big upgrade to their attack this summer given the links to Julian Alvarez and Vinicius Junior, and while they fell short of that goal, midfielder Bruno Guimarães is a pretty neat consolation prize. That Arsenal were able to get him for a $100 million fee lower than some lesser midfielders only adds to the value.

Mikel Arteta's biggest problem in recent years has been a reluctance to rotate his team. Bukayo Saka played almost every game from 2021 to 2024 but has since been forced to miss 20 Premier League games over the past two seasons and never looked fully fit for England at the World Cup.

Declan Rice is on a similarly concerning path. He's played over 9,000 Premier League minutes in his three seasons at Arsenal, with the now-injured William Saliba the only outfield player who has come close to matching that workload. There's good reason of course: Rice's combination of tenacity, physicality and quality from set pieces is difficult to find, but his new teammate offers plenty himself.  

Guimarães has registered 40 goal contributions over the last three seasons, and he's good enough physically that there shouldn't be too much of a drop-off if Rice needs to rest. With the Brazilian now in the fold alongside Martín Zubimendi, Myles Lewis-Skelly, Mikel Merino and Rice, there should be more than enough quality for Arteta to mount another title charge while also saving Rice's legs for the most important parts of the season.

4. Enzo Fernandez

Many people have praised Chelsea for receiving almost $170 million for Enzo Fernandez, but if you injected manager Xabi Alonso with some truth serum, he'd surely be happy to tell you that he'd much rather have the Argentinian midfielder back.

It is undoubtedly a huge fee, but Chelsea are also left without 27 Premier League goal contributions from the last two seasons and over 6,000 minutes played. Good luck finding that level of performance in a market that has valued players such as Sandro Tonali and Elliot Anderson—good players but quite simply not as good as Fernandez—just below that amount.

This has been the summer of the all-around midfielder, and the Argentinian is possibly the best of that archetype. He can affect the game at the top end of the pitch, but he also has the ability to control games from deeper positions if needed, as he showed in Argentina's 2022 World Cup victory aged just 21. 

While Fernandez is unlikely to win any popularity contests this season, his signing is enough to move Manchester City firmly into title contention.

3. Emiliano Martínez

Chelsea paid just over $10 million for Emiliano Martínez, a goalkeeper who has helped Argentina make it to the last two World Cup finals and was a key figure in Aston Villa's resurgence. 

At 34 years old, his signing is another example of the shift in strategy in west London. While it was clear that a new No. 1 was needed even before Robert Sanchez allowed two soft goals in the opening game against Fulham, previously the response would likely have been to either promote 21-year-old backup Mike Penders or find another youngster who could eventually be sold for a profit.

Instead, Chelsea prioritized winning, and there's little question that Martínez is a winner. He even helped Villa to win the Europa League final last season while playing with a broken finger. 

For a team so frequently accused of lacking leadership in recent years, this is the right move at the right time.

2. Bernardo Silva

Bernardo Silva wasn't Real Madrid's biggest splash signing of the summer, but he may be the most important. 

Arriving on a free transfer, the financial value here is unquestionable, not that it matters much to a club with the spending power of Real Madrid. Silva's value extends far beyond his free-agent status, though.

After a season that saw the club's captain Federico Valverde taken to hospital after a training ground fight with Aurélien Tchouaméni, Real Madrid's biggest need this summer was to simply get an adult in the room.

Some may argue new manager José Mourinho was an extension of this strategy, although you don't have to look too hard across his career to find that he had as much chance of making the problems worse as he did of fixing them. 

Throughout Silva's time at Manchester City, it was clear he was a uniting force in the dressing room, both on the field as a leader and behind the scenes as a person. If he can perform the same role in Madrid while also bolstering a midfield that needed reinforcement, this signing could be a game-changer.

1. Rodri

The equation here is pretty simple: Barcelona spent under $70 million to acquire arguably the best midfielder in the world. 

Prior to the FIFA World Cup this summer, there were concerns the 30-year-old had lost a step. But after playing almost every minute for a victorious Spain team and winning the Golden Ball as the tournament's best player, Rodri has reclaimed every bit of his previous reputation at the top of the game.

In addition to signing a player of immense quality, it shouldn't be overlooked that Barcelona needed this. Frenkie de Jong's knee injury still appears to have an uncertain timeline, while Gavi has also struggled for consistency. Marc Bernal, 19, has shown some promise next to Pedri in midfield, but Rodri gives Barcelona the luxury of being patient with his development.

The best-case scenario for this move is that Rodri's ability to control games at the highest level catapults Barcelona into contention for the UEFA Champions League, and it's hard to find any greater difference-maker among the rest of this summer's deals.
