Liverpool Suffers Worst Ever Home Loss in European Play
Liverpool set an unfortunate club record in Wednesday's 3-0 loss to Real Madrid, falling by three or more goals at home for the first time ever in European competition, per ESPN's Paul Carr.
Madrid took a commanding lead in Champions League Group B, netting a 23rd-minute goal from Cristiano Ronaldo that was quickly followed by a pair of Karim Benzema strikes in the 30th and 41st minutes.
Madrid has all nine points and a plus-eight goal differential through three matches, while Liverpool, FC Basel and Ludogorets Razgrad are even at three points apiece.
Wednesday's result, while perhaps not all that surprising in light of the two clubs' recent Champions League records, still had to come as a shock to Liverpool.
The Reds owned a 3-0-0 record against Los Blancos entering Wednesday's match, with a pair of victories in 2009 and another in the 1981 European Cup Final in Paris, per ESPN Stats & Info.
It's rather odd that the two storied clubs have only met in European competition four times, as Real Madrid have a record-setting 10 European Cup/Champions League titles, while Liverpool's five are tied with Bayern Munich's haul for third-best.
Of course, Liverpool enjoyed its greatest period of continental success in the 1970s and 1980s, whereas Madrid dominated the 1950s and 1960s, with another four European titles since 1998.
