Bayern Munich vs. Werder Bremen: Winners and Losers from Bundesliga Game
Bayern Munich returned to Bundesliga action this weekend in the same fashion that they left it, with a comprehensive 6-0 win, this time over bottom of the table Werder Bremen.
Pep Guardiola undoubtedly had the Champions League on his mind, dropping star player Robert Lewandowski, but still had plenty of world-class talent to overcome the league's most disappointing side this season.
A heavy defeat was expected and realistically all that was in store for Robin Dutt's side, as they look to pull themselves back up and continue their search for some kind of form to pull them out of the relegation spot.
Here are Saturday's winners and losers.
Winner: Philipp Lahm
1 of 5
Club captain Philipp Lahm doesn't usually score for Bayern. In over 320 Bundesliga games, including his two seasons at VfB Stuttgart, the former German captain has only scored 10 goals across a very successful league-career, according to Transfermarkt.
Yet, oddly enough, today he was able to pick up two as his side walked to another comprehensive win in the Bundesliga.
Coming off a two week international break that showed just how much his national team miss him, it's nice to see the experienced full-back at the top of his game; still dominating the play and ensuring victories for his beloved club.
Winner: Xabi Alonso
2 of 5
To accompany yet another win for Bayern in the German top division, we were accompanied by yet another wonderful performance from Xabi Alonso.
Although the central midfielder didn't stay on the pitch for the full duration of the game, his presence was notably exceptional throughout the time he had on Saturday.
His game was perfectly summed up by the goal he scored in the 27th minute, when the former Spanish international tricked the Bremen wall into jumping, only to calmly slot the ball under their feet and into the net.
A perfect goal that kindly characterises just what this former Galactico brings to the Bayern team.
Loser: Robin Dutt
3 of 5
Things do not look good for Dutt and his Bremen side at the moment.
Although nobody ever expected the bottom-of-the-league team to take any points off Bayern in their own back yard, Saturday's heavy defeat now means they have gone eight games this season without a single win, conceding 22 goals along the way and scoring just 10.
Hope does come in the form of the next few fixtures, with a massive home game against Koln next week and then a trip to Mainz to follow. Two difficult games, but ones in which Dutt's team can slowly begin clawing back some points.
Winner: Pep Guardiola
4 of 5
Bayern have always had strong squads throughout the years, but Saturday's lineup and reserves on the bench were truly something else.
For Guardiola, it'll go down as really quite some achievement to win by such a margin despite not even needing the services of stars such as Robert Lewandowski.
The Polish striker was kept wrapped up on the bench in careful preparation for Bayern's next big test; their trip to Rome in the Champions League this coming week.
Alongside the Pole, Franck Ribery, Arjen Robben, Alonso and David Alaba played minimal parts in Saturday's win to keep fresh for the match ahead.
A good, solid win for Bayern, but a clean bill of health ahead of the coming test in Italy.
Loser: Bayern's Title Challengers
5 of 5
It may well have been business as usual at the Allianz Arena on Saturday but elsewhere in the Bundesliga chaos and surprise struck among Bayern's key opponents.
Bayer Leverkusen, the early season surprise package, managed to throw away a three goal lead away to Stuttgart to confirm their third straight draw. While Borussia Dortmund fell at the hands of recently promoted Koln by two goals to one.
Gladbach were a breath of fresh air, continuing a strong run of form that has taken them up to second place in the league with a 3-0 win away to Hannover. However, aside from the Foals, it would seem as though no one else is up to the task of keeping tabs on last season's champions.
Despair for neutrals and fans of the Bundesliga's other top clubs, but early delight for Bayern fans around the world.
