Chris Ivory, Chris Johnson's Instant Fantasy Reaction After Week 7

Matt FitzgeraldOct 16, 2014

The New York Jets have consistently stuck with a one-two backfield punch featuring Chris Ivory first and Chris Johnson second. That held true in Thursday's Week 7, 27-25 loss to the New England Patriots.

Ivory had his most complete game of the year, getting the opportunity to use his powerful running style to get into a rhythm. Meanwhile, Johnson racked up decent numbers and had a couple of receptions on the New York's final drive, but proved he belongs in the No. 2 role on the depth chart.

Jets coach Rex Ryan enjoys the ground-and-pound offense, which Ivory is the prototypical ball-carrier for. NFL.com's Chris Trapasso weighed in on Ivory's authoritative gridiron approach:

Ryan gushed about Ivory's power earlier this season.

"(I'm) just glad I'm not tackling him or my kid's not out there tackling him," said Ryan, per the New York Daily News' Seth Walder. "Those are guys that you love to have. Any guy that you don't want your kid to play against, that's the one you take."

It stands to reason he should continue getting the bulk of the carries, but New York's last-ranked passing attack has allowed opponents to crowd the box and create inconsistency in Ivory's production this year.

Improved play from turnover-prone Jets quarterback Geno Smith opened up some running lanes in Foxborough, but Ivory remains an RB2 option at best until Smith shows sustained progress.

As for Johnson, it is becoming clear that his best football is behind him. The former 2,000-yard rusher doesn't have quite the same explosiveness and speed that made him a star in Tennessee, and the presence of Ivory will result in limited touches.

Ivory has just one 100-yard performance in 2014 and had a combined 17 carries for 51 yards (three-yard average) in the two games before Week 7. Until the Jets commit to Ivory on a consistent basis, his fantasy production stands to vary on a weekly basis.
