Arsenal Transfer News: Mats Hummels Bid Reported, Latest on Anderson Talisca

Nick AkermanOct 15, 2014

Arsene Wenger is ready to make a £32 million bid for Borussia Dortmund centre-back Mats Hummels, according to reports.

The Gunners boss "is keen to pair Hummels alongside Laurent Koscielny at the heart of his defence," as reported by Anthony Chapman of the Express. Wenger would likely need to fight off Manchester United's interest if the defender becomes available, as Hummels remains one of the most sought-after players in the world.

Similar to Marco Reus at the Westfalenstadion, the departures of Mario Gotze and Robert Lewandowski have placed Hummels' future under constant speculation. He has repeatedly insisted he wishes to remain in Dortmund but recently admitted he would only be tempted into departing if an elite club with a defined tactical philosophy came calling.

"If a club with a bigger reputation than Dortmund were to make a move, but I don't like the way they play football, I wouldn't even consider a move," said Hummels, reported by Chapman. "At Dortmund, the style of play is exactly the way I want to play football."

Arsenal certainly possess a unique brand which could attract the German. Wenger's team play fast-paced passing football, not too dissimilar to Dortmund. Their counter-attacking edge is based on getting numbers from midfield to support the often lone striker as precise, cut-and-thrust offensive moves take place. Hummels would slot right in, particularly because he is an excellent ballplayer.

Wenger needs physical reinforcements across the board, but he is also said to be pinpointing Benfica's Anderson Talisca in midfield. As reported by Nick Lustig of the Daily Star, his ability to do this will be based on whether he can sell Lukas Podolski, who has finally made it known he wishes to leave.

"I have assessed my position in the team, and it has to change now," said Podolski, per Lustig. "Let's see what happens in the winter. The fact is that I'm not happy with it, that's clear."

Talisca would certainly represent an exciting addition for Arsenal. The midfielder has shot into the consciousness of European football since heading to Portugal from Brazilian side Bahia and is currently top scorer in Liga Sagres with six goals in seven games, per WhoScored.com.

The 20-year-old's 6'2" frame offers power and pace, exactly what Arsenal need through the centre. Of course, the club possesses these qualities with Abou Diaby, but the Frenchman's eternal battle with injury renders him little more than a passenger these days. Talisca is proving himself to be a well-rounded player with a genuine eye for goal, having scored more than Arsenal's midfield combined total this season.

Football writer San outlines potential competition for the player:

Ben Jefferson of the Express noted that Chelsea are also interested in Talisca. Having captured Nemanja Matic from Benfica in January, Jose Mourinho's side may gain an advantage in negotiations if this is true. Either way, a big-money move looks set to push Talisca in a new direction sometime in the not so distant future, highlighting his rapid rise as one of the sport's most impressive youngsters.

Both potential signings would certainly be welcome at the Emirates. Hummels is a natural leader and potential captain of any team he represents. His arrival would also allow Wenger to provide Calum Chambers with a rest and perhaps try the former Southampton starlet in midfield, where he is destined to play. Talisca is a unique talent who could also become a world-beater under Wenger's tutelage.

Getting rid of Podolski may also be a blessing in disguise for the north London club, as he's little more than a passenger now. Wenger needs all the squad slots and cash he can muster to ensure his side compete with the best, so it's likely sacrifices will be made before Arsenal secure any further signings.
