Liverpool Transfer News: Mega Marco Reus Terms Reported, Xherdan Shaqiri Latest

Nick AkermanOct 10, 2014

Liverpool are reportedly ready to make Marco Reus their highest-paid player in an attempt to lure him from Borussia Dortmund.

The German international continues to be linked with a move away from the Westfalenstadion, with Liverpool said to be favourites for his signature.

According to Jamie Anderson of the Express, club "chiefs have given the green-light for (Brendan) Rodgers to offer Reus a contract in excess of £200,000 per-week wages - a considerable increase on his current £60,000 a-week deal."

FOX Soccer highlights the likelihood that Liverpool will face major competition if the player is placed on the market:

Rodgers is also said to be on the trail of Bayern Munich's Xherdan Shaqiri, a player whose continued chatter in the press perhaps defines his frustrations at the club. Despite previously insisting he is happy at the Allianz Arena, Shaqiri has once again indicated he may look for a move in order to play first-team football. Colin Harvey of the Daily Star reported the Swiss star's latest comments:

"

I sat down with the club and made my position. I accepted staying, but in the winter we need to sit again and look at the situation. The key to performing well is to maintain good contact with the coach and to enjoy his confidence, but it has not always been the case here. I need confidence and I struggle to contribute if something is amiss.

Rodgers is certainly the type of coach whose methods would adhere to Shaqiri's needs. Personable and willing to work one-on-one with players, Rodgers' attention to detail continues to help the likes of Daniel Sturridge, Philippe Coutinho and Raheem Sterling unlock their full potential.

Shaqiri has started just three games across the Bundesliga and Champions League. As hinted at in his comments, sporadic play isn't helping the 23-year-old reach his best form. He showed exactly what he can do with plenty of game time at the 2014 World Cup, where he netted a stunning hat-trick during Switzerland's 3-0 win over Honduras.

It isn't unlike Rodgers to rescue ailing players from difficult situations. Liverpool's reported pursuit of free-agent Victor Valdes, per Aaron Flanagan of the Mirror, is testimony of this. The former Barcelona goalkeeper is working to regain fitness after surgery on his knee and could represent a real challenge to Simon Mignolet's position in the starting XI.

Fabrizio Romano of Sky Italia believes talks have begun over a move:

All three potential signings would be excellent for Liverpool. These are world-class names, those proven at the highest level, all of whom are motivated to continue improving. Rodgers did well to establish decent squad depth in the summer but is yet to see each of his new faces bed themselves in. Added quality through Reus, Shaqiri and Valdes would certainly soften the transition.

Of course, signing all three is extremely unlikely, or nigh on impossible if players don't depart. Rodgers is yet to secure a marquee acquisition that truly makes the world take notice—think Alexis Sanchez to Arsenal or Radamel Falcao to Manchester United—but could certainly do so if Reus was to appear on Merseyside.

It would be a brave, yet calculated move for Liverpool to throw big bucks at the player. His arrival could finally banish thoughts of Luis Suarez and what may have been if he remained at Anfield. A consistent match-winner is craved, someone who can pop up with a moment of magic when needed, something Reus has proven is well within his capabilities across the last two-and-a-half years with Dortmund.
