England vs. San Marino: Goals, Highlights from the European Qualifier

Ryan BaileyOct 9, 2014

In their second Euro 2016 qualification match, England played host to lowly San Marino on Thursday night.

Going into the game, the visitors boasted a record of 119 losses from 123 matches since 1990, winning only once, as per The Guardian.

The side, comprised of mostly semi-professional players, have scored 20 goals and conceded 531, leading many to expect a landslide victory for the Three Lions.

England, however, took 25 minutes to break the deadlock, with Phil Jagielka heading in from a corner virtually unchallenged.

It wasn't quite as impressive as his screamer against Liverpool in the Merseyside derby, but it represented a personal landmark.

Calum Chambers was given a start in defence, but his tekkers left a little to be desired.

In the 42nd minute, Wayne Rooney drew a foul from Andy Selva in the penalty area and converted the resulting spot kick himself with a confident drive to the top-right corner.

Roy Hodgson was very pleased with Rooney's 42nd international goal.

The Three Lions didn't take long after the break to add a third, with Danny Welbeck slotting home from a Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain pass in the 49th minute.

There was mild controversy in the 62nd minute, when Adam Lallana had a seemingly legitimate goal disallowed for offside.

After Wayne Rooney was denied by the goalkeeper, the ball fell to the Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, who took a shot through traffic which clipped Lallana on its way into the net.

It was ruled out for offside, but replays suggest Lallana was onside and he should have been awarded his first England goal.

Andros Townsend was brought on as a substitute in the 66th minute and took a little over five minutes to make his impact with a wonderful left-footed strike from the edge of the area to make it 4-0.

A goalkeeper shouldn't really be beaten at his near-post, but credit should be given for the power of the shot.

In the 77th minute, a Wayne Rooney cross was turned into the net by San Marino defender Alex Della Valle.

Sadly, this wasn't Valle's first experience of an own goal for England.
