Chiefs vs. 49ers: Live Score and Analysis for San Francisco
Alex Smith and the Kansas City Chiefs traveled to San Francisco to take on the 49ers in Week 5.
This was the first regular-season matchup between Smith and the team that drafted him No. 1 overall in the 2005 NFL draft. Now a part of the Chiefs, Smith faced off against his replacement, Colin Kaepernick.
Kaepernick looked to lead the 49ers in back-to-back wins after San Francisco knocked off the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 4.

Kansas City was equally as impressive the week prior, knocking off the New England Patriots on Monday Night Football in decisive fashion a week ago. Riding a two-game winning streak, the Chiefs looked to give Smith the support necessary to upset his former team.
Both teams previously experienced up-and-down moments prior to the game. But with a quarter of the 2014 season in the books, we started to get an idea about how each franchise was panning out. The 49ers have done an excellent job in stopping the run with the exception of Week 1.
On the other hand, the Chiefs entered the game having allowed the 20th-most rushing yards after four weeks. This played right into the 49ers' ground approach, as they utilized Frank Gore and rookie back Carlos Hyde.
Much of the focus centered on Smith's return and how his numbers would match up against those of Kaepernick. But both teams wanted to get above the .500 mark, yet only one team enjoyed that accolade.
Smith hooked up with tight end Travis Kelce to put the Chiefs up on the board first. San Francisco answered back with a Phil Dawson field goal later in the quarter.
Kansas City posted a field goal of their own early in the second quarter, which was equally answered on the subsequent 49ers' drive.
But Kaepernick found wide receiver Stevie Johnson late in the first half—a nine-yard touchdown pass that gave San Francisco the lead.
Halftime gave way to a Levi's Stadium only half filled as fans were still trying to find their seats in the hot sun. Before many of them could reach their seats, Alex Smith hooked up with DeAnthony Thomas for another Chiefs touchdown.
The 49ers closed the gap—and subsequently took the lead—with a trio of unanswered Phil Dawson field goals. After an Alex Smith interception by Perrish Cox, the 49ers were able to put this hard-fought game on ice.
San Francisco now sits at 3-2 five weeks into the season.
Final: Chiefs 17, 49ers 22
