Sam Allardyce 'Disappointed' Louis van Gaal Did Not Offer Him Drink After Game

Sean FayOct 3, 2014

When Sir Alex Ferguson was manager of Manchester United, one of his traditions was to invite the visiting manager into his office after the game for a glass of wine.

Ferguson was usually in a good mood after picking up three points, but the losing manager could at least console himself with a nice tipple after the match.

However, it does not look like Louis van Gaal has continued the practice—much to the chagrin of West Ham manager Sam Allardyce.

Big Sam clearly worked up a thirst after watching his side fall to a 2-1 defeat at Old Trafford last weekend, but Van Gaal was nowhere to be seen when he went to get his post-match beverage.

As Allardyce wrote in his column for the Evening Standard:

"

I always invite the visiting manager into my office for a drink and a chat after a home game.

It’s a valued tradition as far as I and most managers are concerned, a chance to have a private conversation and wind down.

Which is why I was surprised and, yes, disappointed, that there was no such invitation following our match at Old Trafford last weekend.

When all was done and dusted after the match, I went to where Sir Alex Ferguson was invariably waiting with a glass of wine — and everything had changed. I think the room is now used for analysis.

"

Poor Sam, but his disappointment is perhaps more understandable when you consider just how good the wine Ferguson used to offer up was.

Ferguson sold part of his wine collection earlier this year for a staggering £2.2 million.
