Chiefs vs. Broncos: Twitter Reaction and Full Post-Game Quotes
The Denver Broncos handled their business in Week 2 against the Kansas City Chiefs. The game was a lot closer than some thought it would be, but Denver still came out on top, 24-17.
This was their first divisional win of the season, and the Broncos advanced to 2-0 for the second consecutive year and the 22nd time in team history.
For the second week in a row, the Broncos offense showed more balance between the passing game and the ground game. Peyton Manning put up most of his stats early, with three touchdowns in the first half.

Rookie WRs Who Will Outplay Their Draft Value 📈
The Broncos got off to a hot start in their opening drive. Mike Klis, from the Denver Post, summed the drive up perfectly.
"Pretty easy: 7 plays, 80 yards, 3:41. Peyton Manning 4 of 4, 71 yards, TD.
— Mike Klis (@MikeKlis) Sept. 14, 2014"
Tight end Julius Thomas continued his dominance on Sunday. He caught a 4-yard touchdown pass from Manning early in the first quarter, his fourth of the season, the most by a Bronco in team history through two games.
"With that TD, Julius Thomas has the most TD catches in DEN history of any #Broncos player in the first 2 games of the season.
— Cecil Lammey (@cecillammey) Sept. 14, 2014"
Denver’s ground game struggled to gain much positive yardage early in the game. Jeff Legwold, of ESPN.com, noted that in his tweet.
"#Broncos runs on first down today have gone for 7, 0, 1 and 1...last week they have eight first-down runs go for 1 or fewer yards.
— Jeff Legwold (@Jeff_Legwold) Sept. 14, 2014"
The running back duo of Montee Ball and C.J. Anderson did end up with better stats at the end of the day. Ball finished the game with 12 carries for 60 yards (5.0 yards per carry), while Anderson had five carries for 31 yards (6.2 yards per carry). They’ll continue to work to spring both backs regularly in the coming weeks.
Broncos head coach John Fox had some positive things to say about his running backs after the game:
"Without looking at the tape I thought there were some flashes," Fox said. "I wish they were all 8-yard gains. That other team practices and gets paid, too. I’ll look at the tape, it’s hard to say. I know we could have defended the run—ourselves—in the first half much better. But it’s something we cleaned up in the second half and I thought that was a positive."
The Broncos defense did suffer from several offsides penalties during the game against the Chiefs. These penalties helped keep drives alive for the Chiefs, and that is one area the team should certainly focus on going forward.
Lindsay H. Jones, from USA Today, was spot on in this tweet about the Broncos defensive penalties.
"The Broncos are going to be hearing the word "offsides" in their nightmares
— Lindsay Jones (@bylindsayhjones) Sept. 14, 2014"
Linebacker Nate Irving expressed some frustration after the game.
“Yeah, the offside [penalty] and letting them complete third-and-longs on us, we have to go back and look at things on film to see where we messed up at,” he said.
So what should Broncos’ fans expect going forward into a rematch of the Super Bowl in Week 3? The Seattle Seahawks fought an AFC West opponent on the road in Week 2, and they were beat by the San Diego Chargers, 30-21. Now, they’ll return home to face an undefeated Broncos team in a game that every NFL fan will be glued to next Sunday.
There are some fans in Broncos Country who don’t feel good about this win. Any player or coach will tell you that a win is a win. The Broncos will study the film this week, learn what they did wrong and make proper improvements.
The Seahawks are the best team the Broncos will face in the regular season—and they could certainly face them again in the Super Bowl this year.
There is zero room for error when playing a team like Seattle. The task of beating the Seahawks is a difficult one, and it becomes nearly impossible when the team is playing at a high level in the comfort of Century Link Field.
Broncos cornerback Chris Harris is looking forward to playing Seattle in Week 3:
"I mean my motivation is try to do whatever I can to help this team win when we get to Seattle," Harris said. "Not being able to play in the Super Bowl, that stuck in my head. Man, I got hurt at the wrong time and didn’t get to help my guys. That’s how I look at it. I look at it as I’m back this week versus them and it’s going to be a different game."
The Broncos need to play mistake-free football if they want to take down the defending world champions. No, it’s not “revenge” if the Broncos win in Week 3. However, it is a great measuring stick for the Broncos to learn if they’re capable of hanging with the NFL’s best.
