Pittsburgh Pirates' 2014 All-Prospect Team

Ryan GauleSep 22, 2014

While the Pittsburgh Pirates are currently seeking their second straight playoff appearance, they are also looking forward to the future.

The Pirates received a few great seasons from some of the most highly ranked prospects in their farm system, as well as a few breakout seasons from guys who were not considered top prospects entering the season.

Let's take a look at the top prospects from each position for the Pirates after the 2014 minor league regular season ended.

Note: the Pirates' future is very bright, and you will see that based on the numbers these guys put up in 2014.

Catcher: Reese McGuire

1 of 9

Catcher Reese McGuire has put together a nice season in 2014 with the Single-A West Virginia Power.

In 98 games, the 19-year-old batted .262 with three home runs and 45 runs batted in.

According to a report from Baseball America, McGuire was ranked eighth among all Pirates prospects entering the 2014 regular season.  He was also ranked as the best defensive catcher in Pittsburgh's farm system.

With current catcher Russell Martin about to hit free agency, it is unknown whether the Pirates will re-sign him.

While McGuire is still probably a few seasons away from making the transition to the Major League level, he gives fans in Pittsburgh a lot to be hopeful of.

First Base: Andrew Lambo

2 of 9

Andrew Lambo made his Major League debut in 2013 for the Pirates, batting .233 with one home run in 18 games played.

In 61 games with the Triple-A Indianapolis Indians in 2014, Lambo owned an impressive .328 batting average with 11 home runs, prompting Pittsburgh to call him back up to the majors this September.

In 18 games this season with the Pirates, Lambo is batting .278 with one run batted in and three runs scored.

According to the same report from Baseball America, Lambo was the best power hitter in Pittsburgh's farm system entering 2014.

Second Base: Kelson Brown

3 of 9

Second baseman Kelson Brown has played five seasons in the minors as a member of the Pirates organization.

In 2014, his third season with the Double-A Altoona Curve, Brown batted .295 with eight RBI in 129 at bats.

After batting just .192 in 53 games in 2013, Brown has emerged as a valuable player in Pittsburgh's farm system.

Shortstop: Alen Hanson

4 of 9

Shortstop Alen Hanson entered the 2014 regular season ranked sixth among all Pirates prospects according to Baseball America.

He lived up to that ranking with the Altoona Curve, batting .280 while blasting 11 home runs in 118 games.

At only 21 years of age, Hanson has the potential to be a great everyday shortstop at the Major League level.

Third Base: Drew Maggi

5 of 9

Third baseman Drew Maggi had a stellar 2014 season while playing for the Altoona Curve.

In 110 games played, the 25-year-old third baseman batted a career-high .280 with 50 walks.

Maggi led his team and all third basemen in the Double-A Eastern League with 37 stolen bases, showing that he has rare speed for a third baseman.

Due to his offensive outburst in 2014, Maggi could be called up to Triple-A Indianapolis in 2015, his sixth professional season.

Left Field: Keon Broxton

6 of 9

Left fielder Keon Broxton broke out in 2014, batting .275 while playing for Altoona.

The 24-year-old ranked third among his teammates with 15 home runs in 127 games played.  He also hit nine triples and 22 doubles.

Broxton has also displayed speed on the basepath, stealing 25 bases this season and upping his career total to 111 swiped bags in six minor league seasons.

Center Field: Austin Meadows

7 of 9

When the Pirates drafted Austin Meadows with the ninth overall pick in the 2013 MLB June Amateur Draft, they knew they were getting someone special.

Ranked fourth overall among prospects in the Pirates' farm system by Baseball America, Meadows played 38 games in 2014 with Single-A West Virginia, batting .322 with three home runs.

Meadows is still only 19 years old, so he has plenty of time to develop before being called up to the majors.

Still, Pittsburgh fans have to be excited about the idea of one day having an outfield that consists of star Andrew McCutchen, Gregory Polanco and Austin Meadows.

Right Field: Mel Rojas

8 of 9

Mel Rojas was outstanding for Altoona in 2014, prompting his promotion to Triple-A Indianapolis after playing 53 games in Double-A.

In 53 games with Altoona, Rojas batted .303 with five home runs and 36 RBI.

His numbers fell off a bit with the Indians, but he still put up solid statistics, batting .277 with another five home runs in 77 games played.

The Pirates have plenty of offensive weapons in their outfield, but Rojas could be a guy who could help the team in 2015.

Pitcher: Tyler Glasnow

9 of 9

The Pirates struck gold when they drafted Tyler Glasnow in the fifth round of the 2011 MLB June Amateur Draft.

As of now, it is looking like Glasnow could have legitimately been drafted in the first round.

In 23 starts with the Bradenton Marauders in 2014, Glasnow went 12-7 with a dazzling 1.74 ERA.  In three minor league seasons, Glasnow owns a 21-11 record with an ERA of 1.94.

According to Jonathan Mayo of MLB.com, Glasnow was recently named MLBPipeline.com's pitching prospect of the year.

The Pirates have a bright future ahead of them thanks to a farm system that will help an already strong Major League club.

With Glasnow and Gerrit Cole leading the rotation in a few seasons, the Pirates could have one of the best rotations in baseball for years to come.
