Yankees Grounds Crew Nearly Loses a Man in Mighty Struggle with Rain Tarp
A strange evening devolved into stranger infield shenanigans at Yankee Stadium on Wednesday night thanks to strong winds and a torrential downpour.
The deluge began in the fifth inning and persisted late into the night, gifting the Yankees a controversial 2-1 win over the Texas Rangers.
The gale also nearly left the New York Yankees grounds crew searching for a new member. The men in white charged onto the field to tarp up the diamond and struggled mightily with the sheet. Rain weighed the tarp down; wind blew it back. This scenario rinsed and repeated for some time as the infield turned into a muddy soup.
The storm quieted down, but the struggle continued as the crew hurried to cover ground. Somewhere in the mayhem, one unfortunate crewman lagged behind and was swallowed up by the heavy moving sheet.
As smothering a colleague is frowned upon in the workplace, the Yankees grounds crew sent more men under the tarp, solving the problem with sound, "cut around the meat" logic.
The good news is everyone made it out from under the tarpaulin alive. Unfortunately, their efforts would prove futile (or extremely beneficial).
After all their work, officials determined the infield was too soft and called the game, giving the Yankees a strange but welcomed victory.
Rangers manager Ron Washington was not happy with the result or the performance of the home team’s grounds crew.
"What made me complain was because of them not being able to get the tarp on the field," Washington told ESPN. "This game shouldn’t come to us losing it. It should have been suspended."
Bad things happen. Man’s best plans mean nothing to nature. Also, unfolding a tarp in a gale is like trying to towel off under a waterfall. You’re asking for problems.
I, for one, blame Derek Jeter. Mother Nature clearly has a crush on him.
