Jrue Holiday: What Will the Star PG Bring to New Orleans?
No team will have a better draft than the New Orleans Pelicans, and they gave away their first-round pick.
Of course, in the process of trading Nerlens Noel, New Orleans acquired Jrue Holiday from the Philadelphia 76ers, according to Yahoo! Sports' Adrian Wojnarowski.
Wojnaworski amended the initial tweet.
ESPN's Marc Stein reported there is protection on the pick from Nos. 1-5.
Simply put, this is a great move for the Pelicans.
They offload a big man with knee problems and a 2014 first-rounder for a 23-year-old point guard who's coming off of an All-Star season. It is very ironic that it's Philadelphia who is getting Noel. The 76ers swap one center with knee issues, Andrew Bynum, for another, Noel.
Greivis Vasquez had a good season. Getting Holiday is a major upgrade, though. And now New Orleans can flip Vasquez when his value is at its highest. Surely the Pelicans would be able to reel in a nice haul.
Holiday made a huge jump last year, finishing with 17.7 points and 8.0 points a game. He had a field-goal percentage of 43.1 percent and a true-shooting percentage of 49.6 percent. Those numbers aren't great and don't reflect upon Holiday's offensive ability.
He's a point guard who can knock down some shots on the floor and drive to the basket. Holiday is also a very skilled passer capable of finding his teammates from anywhere on the court.
Some people might knock Holiday on the 76ers' overall team performance. After all, they did finish ninth in the Eastern Conference.
It's important to remember just how much it hurt that Andrew Bynum wasn't able to play. As a result, Philadelphia essentially gave up Nikola Pekovic and Andre Iguodala for nothing. The team was doomed and finished last in scoring as a result.
Holiday flourished despite his supporting cast. If he's not a top-10 point guard in the league yet, he's right on the fringe.
It's very hard to find a franchise point guard in the NBA. That's exactly what the Pelicans have done by making this move. Holiday can be the point guard for the present and future for the team. Considering how long he's been in the league, you forget that he's still only 23. This is a player who's only going to get better.
Holiday is only on the rise. In a couple of years, he can become an elite point guard. You can't really say that about Vazquez.
When you throw Holiday together with Anthony Davis, you've got a great young core of players. Davis is only 20 years old and will greatly benefit from this trade. He's not an offensively skilled 4. With a point guard like Holiday, Davis' best attributes will be magnified.
Eric Gordon's future with the team is still unknown at this point. He's never really been happy in New Orleans, and now the team is adding Holiday's four-year, $41 million deal to go along with the $29 million it will pay Gordon over the next two seasons. There's a player option for $15.5 million 2015-16.
With that in mind, Gordon is likely gone, which is probably better considering his attitude.
That still leaves the Pelicans with a talented offensive point guard who's only going to get better now that he's been freed from Doug Collins' offense. Considering what New Orleans gave up, this is a great move for the franchise.
