3 of the Most Important San Antonio Spurs Players in the Finals

Andy HuJun 8, 2018

The San Antonio Spurs are on their way to their fifth NBA Finals appearance in 14 years, and their roster this year is much different than any of the rosters in the previous four times they've made it there.

Gregg Popovich transformed his slow-paced, defense-first squad of the early 2000s to a fast-paced, offensively efficient team and added versatile swingmen to defend some of the best players in the NBA.

With an NBA championship on the line, the Spurs will have to rely on these three players much more than any other player on the team, because their play will ultimately determine the outcome of the following series.

Tony Parker

1 of 3

The Spurs' MVP for the entire season will also be one of their most important players in the NBA Finals. The Spurs will face either the Miami Heat or Indiana Pacers, and Tony Parker will have the matchup advantage over any opposing point guard in those matchups.

In two games against the Pacers this season, Parker has averaged 19.5 points and 8.5 assists on 50 percent shooting from the field (per Basketball Reference). Against the Heat, his numbers weren't spectacular in the one game he played in (12 points, eight assists, 28.6 percent shooting), but that doesn't mean he will continue to have mediocre performances against them.

If the Spurs face the Pacers, Parker's playmaking and dribble penetration will be crucial to opening up the floor for the rest of his teammates, as the Pacers are the best defensive team in the league. If there's anybody who can break down their defense, it's Parker, especially because the Pacers' interior defense is probably even more dangerous.

Tim Duncan

2 of 3

Tim Duncan's production will be crucial, because it's almost mandatory that he has to step up and play well if the Spurs want to secure the championship.

He presents the best matchup against the likes of the David West and Roy Hibbert of the Pacers' frontcourt, and he will be the best big man if they happen to face the Heat.

His averages during the regular season against both teams were admirable, as he posted up 17 points and 12 rebounds in his lone game against the Heat and averaged 18 points and 14 rebounds in two games against the Pacers.

Duncan's play against his matchups will also determine how effectively the Spurs can score the basketball. The offense cannot run through Parker for the entire game, and Duncan's rejuvenated play will definitely demand his attention in the paint.

He will be the biggest guy on the floor if the Spurs face the Heat, and his interior defense will be key to stopping West and Hibbert if the Spurs face the Pacers.

Kawhi Leonard

3 of 3

Defensively speaking, Kawhi Leonard will be the most important defender against either team the Spurs will face in the Finals.

Leonard will be the primary defender on LeBron James if they happen to play against the Heat, and he will be the primary defender on Paul George if they play the Pacers. In either case, Leonard will be assigned the most difficult task out of any other player on the Spurs.

It's not surprising, though, as Leonard has been called upon to guard the opposing team's best perimeter or wing players throughout the entire season. He's an incredibly versatile defender and is the best player to throw at James or George.

According to 82games.com, Leonard has held opposing small forwards to a low PER of 12.6, which is remarkable considering the talent at that position right now.

The NBA Finals will be a breakout campaign for Leonard, so people around the world could get to know his name. It will be a challenge for the sophomore from San Diego State, but it's not like it's something he hasn't seen before.
