USA vs. Canada: Date, Time, Live Stream, TV Info and Preview for Women's Match

Tim DanielsJun 8, 2018

The United States and Canada are set to meet for the first time since last year's London Olympics. The Americans won that controversial semifinal match courtesy of an Alex Morgan header in extra time and went on to win gold.

Canada held the lead on three separate occasions in the match—Christine Sinclair scored all three goals—but they couldn't stop the United States' comeback. Abby Wambach scored the third equalizer after a bizarre sequence started by a rare six-second call.

The American squad will be without a couple key players, most notably goalkeeper Hope Solo and playmaking midfielder Megan Rapinoe, which puts the onus on other members of the squad to fill the void. So depth will be key for the U.S.

Lingering emotions from the Olympic clash should add some intensity to the friendly. Let's take a glance at all the key information for the match, followed by a breakdown of some players to watch and a prediction for the border rivalry.

Where: BMO Field in Toronto, Canada

When: Sunday, June 2 at 4:30 p.m. ET

United States Player to Watch: Abby Wambach

Wambach has scored 155 international goals, which leaves her just three behind the legendary Mia Hamm for the most in the national team's history. It should only be a matter of time before she becomes the most prolific goal scorer for the women's squad.

The veteran forward, who plays club football for the Western New York Flash, has found the net 10 times against Canada. It's tied for the third highest total among any opponent, trailing only Mexico (19) and Norway (12).

Even though Wambach won't have Rapinoe to deliver pinpoint crosses, her connection with Alex Morgan should be strong enough to create several scoring chances for both strikers. It wouldn't be a surprise to see her take another step or two toward Hamm's record.

Canada Player to Watch: Christine Sinclair

The performance from Sinclair in the Olympic semifinal was a sight to behold. She was downright dominant at times, using her size and strength to overpower the American defense. The only thing missing was the victory.

Like Wambach, she's had plenty of success at the international level. Her 145 goals are more than double any other player in Canadian national team history. In terms of current players on the squad, the next highest is Melissa Tancredi at 22.

So it's obvious how important Sinclair is to the team's success. Since the Americans are missing a couple important pieces, including the player she's been tasked with beating so many times over the years (Solo), there's an opportunity for her to carry Canada to the win.

Matchup to Watch: Alex Morgan vs. Canada Back Line

Although the focus is currently on Wambach's pursuit of Hamm's record, Morgan is on a terrific goal-scoring pace of her own with 42 at age 23. If she's able to maintain that level of form, one day she will be closing in on the top spot just like her fellow striker is right now.

What makes Morgan such a special talent is her speed. At least a couple of times each match she turns on the jets and breezes past defenders like they are moving in slow motion. It makes her a nightmare assignment for opposing defenders.

Canada was able to contain her for 122 minutes last summer in London, but she struck in the final minute to cap off one of the greatest matches in women's soccer history. How the Canadians defend her on Sunday will have a major impact on the outcome.
