Breaking Down the Pros and Cons of Rumored New NY Knicks Jersey
The Brooklyn Nets aren't the only New York team getting a new uniform this season. The New York Knicks will officially unveil their own set of new duds on September 6, but fans paying attention already know what to expect.
Every basketball junky's favorite video game, NBA2K13, has already leaked screen shots of the new jerseys (viewable here).
The changes hardly constitute a massive overhaul, but there are some notable tweaks.
Black stripes have been removed from the uniforms, and silver stripes have been added around the neck and arms. An alternate logo will also replace the previous one above the players' names on the back of the uniforms, paying homage to a logo used back in the 70s.
The adjustments won't impact the team nearly as much as its roster additions and subtractions, but it's time to weigh in on the new look.
Here are the pros and cons.
Pro: NYC Definitely Needs to Channel the Knicks of the 1970s
1 of 5The New York Knicks can't bring legends like Willis Reed back to the roster, but they can bring back a logo.
Hopefully, it will inspire the kind of play that won the franchise championships in 1970 and 1973. That was the golden age for this organization, and it's certainly worth paying tribute to guys like Reed and Walt Frazier.
Even if today's Knicks don't live up to those lofty standards, fans should remember just how good this team was once upon a time.
It's been a while, but we may be seeing the light at the end of the tunnel if Carmelo Anthony, Amar'e Stoudemire and Tyson Chandler can all live up to their paychecks.
Con: The Previous Logos Actually Looked Kind of Cool
2 of 5Inspired by vintage New York City subway tokens, the logo the Knicks are replacing really looked pretty good, albeit in a funky sort of way.
Granted, the logo is small enough that it's not easy to notice or even see unless Amar'e Stoudemire is posting up against you. But, the organization clearly felt it was important enough that it was worth changing.
If it doesn't channel those 1970s greats, then we really just have an inferior logo on our hands.
It was fun while it lasted.
Pro: They Don't Look Like the Sacramento Kings' Uniforms
3 of 5At least the New York Knicks' new uniforms aren't purple, a choice Sacramento Kings fans can't possibly appreciate.
Nor do they have the bizarre stripe scheme employed by the Washington Wizards' jerseys, or the Utah Jazz's abysmal logo. Most importantly, the new Knicks' look doesn't at all resemble the Toronto Raptors' claw-donning duds, a uniform that looks like it should be used in the D-League or maybe even on a middle-school team.
In other words, it could be much, much worse.
Whatever you think about NYC's changes, just be thankful they didn't go crazy here.
Con: Silver? Ehh...
4 of 5Let's be honest.
The silver stripes look kind of ridiculous. It's a bit bizarre that they appear to stop halfway down the sleeves, and it looks sort of like whoever was sewing them on just fell asleep halfway through the job.
And why silver? I'm no fashion expert, but I think it clashes. Even if it doesn't clash, I'm just not a fan of metallic colors, I suppose.
Plus, those black stripes looked much better. Black and orange make for a good fit.
Pro: No One Will Notice
5 of 5The New York Knicks have way too much history to do anything too drastic to their uniforms. They already had a classy look to them, and it would have bordered on heresy to make any massive adjustments.
If you're not a Knicks fan, you probably won't even notice that something changed.
And, if you are a Knicks fan, you might be wondering what all the fuss is about. This isn't exactly on par with Jeremy Lin's free agency debacle.
The Knicks probably wanted to boost merchandise sales or steal some media attention from the Nets—who knows? The minor tweaks are anything but earth-shattering, and that's a good thing. The last thing you'd want to see is that recognizable font going anywhere or the trademark orange and blue dismissed.
We're not talking about at expansion team here.
