Rajon Rondo: Incredible Assist Streak a Reminder That Rondo Is Celtics' MVP
Rajon Rondo is good—really good.
In Boston's past 19 games, Rondo has bashed us over the head with this reminder.
Mired in trade rumors for the first half of the season, Rondo seemed upset and distracted at times during games. Since the All-Star break, however, he's pushed himself to a level we haven’t seen from the point guard position in a long time.
Heading into action on Thursday, Rondo has notched 10 or more assists over a ridiculous 19-game stretch. On Wednesday against the Atlanta Hawks, he notched his sixth triple-double of the year en route to an insane 10 point, 10 rebound, 20 assist line.
His quickness off the dribble is impossible to stop and his vision in traffic and on the fast break is only rivaled by Chris Paul. What makes Rondo even more impressive is his lack of a consistent jump shot. Teams love to sag off him, yet he still blows by defenders.
Coach Doc Rivers recognizes that Rondo has to play well in order for the Celtics to be at their best (via Yahoo Sports):
"He's playing extremely well, he's just been spectacular. And that's why we're winning. It's not just him, it's everybody. But we need a locked-in effort from him every night and he's doing that.
"
In his last 27 games, he has failed to notch double-digit totals only twice. While he’s averaging roughly 3.9 turnovers over that span, the team can live with that considering he has the ball in his hands for the majority of most possessions. And considering he still sports a career high with a 3.5-to-1 assist-to-turnover ratio, it’s really not a concern.
When Rondo is in the game, he assists on a ridiculous 51.4-percent of the Celtics' made field goals. Only three players have ever done this over the course of an entire season. When you factor that in with the 12.2 points he scores, there is little doubt that everything the Celtics do offensively revolves around their 26-year-old point guard.
If Rondo notches 10 assists on Friday against the Toronto Raptors, he will be only the third ever player to notch double-digit assists in 20-straight games, joining Hall of Famers John Stockton and Magic Johnson.
8-2 in their last 10 and 18-8 in their past 26, the Celtics are playing their best basketball of the season right now and it begins and ends with Rondo.
The mini-resurgence of Kevin Garnett helps, but there is no question this team will go as far as Rondo can take them.
