LeBron James: 5 Things the Miami Heat Star Can Do to Become the G.O.A.T.

LeBron BryantJun 7, 2018

LeBron James is often the talk of the NBA, and for good reason. The Miami Heat star has physical capabilities and talent that no one has ever witnessed in the league.

Many would argue James was placed in Cleveland to lead his hometown team to an NBA title and become one of the greatest of all time. That story would seem better fit for history.

The fact is James decided to alter his history. He bolted from Cleveland for the clear water of South Beach and a REALISTIC chance at winning. To say James had any chance of winning a title in Cleveland is the equivalent of saying LeBron can grow an Afro. It simply can't and won't happen.

Analysts and the public seem to disqualify James from G.O.A.T. status when he teamed up with friend Dwyane Wade.

But should James really be put on the backburner when discussing NBA legends?

Absolutely not.

Here are five things LBJ can do to change everyone's mind and become the greatest player ever!

Continue to Increase His Numbers

1 of 5

LeBron James stuffs the stat sheet more than any player before him. He is always among the league leaders in points, rebounds and assists.

James boasts career averages of 27.6 PPG, 7.2 RPG and 6.9 APG.

This season has seen James become even better by keeping the aforementioned numbers and increasing his field-goal percentage by five percent to have one of the better seasons in NBA history.

If LeBron continues to get better as everyone predicts, what type of numbers will he post in the next couple of seasons?

It's sure to put him even further into rare air.

Have More Clutch Performances

2 of 5

I'm not the guy who claims that LeBron has never played well in the clutch.

I remember him willing his team past the Pistons in the fourth quarter to make it to the NBA Finals.

I watched him and Paul Pierce duke it out in the Eastern Conference final for 40 apiece.

I even recall the monster performances against the Chicago Bulls and Boston Celtics in last year's playoffs.

However, I also remember the woeful eight points he had against the Dallas Mavericks in the NBA Finals collapse of last season.

LeBron has time to get this monkey off his back, and winning NOW can cure it.

Clutch performances and rings go together; it's that simple.

Dirk Nowitzki killed a career of underachieving with ONE spectacular clutch performance.

IF LBJ wins the NBA Finals convincingly and comes up big in crunch time, he will began to reshape our thinking about his clutch abilities.

Add DPOY to His Resume

3 of 5

One thing LBJ prides himself on is his great individual defense.

We know what he has done this year as Miami has dealt with injuries. James has defended every position on the court this year. Magic Johnson is the only other player in history to do so, and that has to be quantified.

James was actually guarding the likes of Dwight Howard, Derrick Rose, Kevin Durant, Pau Gasol and Kobe Bryant. We can't forget earlier in the season when James denied Dwight any position in the post in crucial moments of their matchup...classic.

James may or may not win Defensive Player of the Year for this season, but he needs to add one to his resume before his career ends.

Set the Record for MVPs

4 of 5

Hall of Famer Kareem Abdul-Jabbar won the NBA MVP award an unprecedented six times.

How great it would be for James to break this record.

Clutch arguments aside, no one can argue about James in the regular season.

He will likely win the award this season, giving him three for his career.

James would then need to pull off four more trophies, which is not impossible, considering he is only 27.

Win 6 or More Titles

5 of 5

The benchmark has been set.

Jordan won six rings and set the standard.

I was thinking of making it four to five rings, but considering the fact that Jordan retired and unretired twice, six seems to be fitting.

LeBron is very capable of playing at a high level for the next six to seven years. If the Miami Heat win a title this year, it would take immense pressure off James' back.

The other titles would then be a piece of cake, allowing him to win multiple rings in consecutive years.
