Tim Tebow Trade Rumors: No New York or Jacksonville, It's Green Bay or Bust

Todd McElweeMay 31, 2018

The Peyton Manning free agency mêlée is mercifully over.

Now, with the ink still drying on No. 18’s colossal Denver Broncos contract, football fans everywhere can once again set their clocks to Tim Tebow time.

The most polarizing figure in football, if not all of sports, is up for grabs, with John Elway and the rest of the Denver brass currently fielding offers for the quarterback who piloted the Broncos to the AFC West title and second round of the playoffs.

Most major media outlets are reporting that Jacksonville, Green Bay and the New York Jets all have interest in acquiring Tebow. But where should the former Heisman Trophy winner hope to end up?

Tebow should hope and pray he doesn’t end up in New York. Gotham’s second-tier organization is in a state of perpetual chaos.

Chesty head coach Rex Ryan has taken the Jets to a pair of AFC Championship games, but last year looked like a conductor recklessly speeding his train off the rails en route to an underwhelming 8-8 mark.

The Jets’ success stemmed from a potent running game and carnivorous defense, both of which waned in 2011. New York finished 22nd in rushing offense at 105.8 yard per game. And though the Jets were a solid fifth in overall defense, ranked a lowly 20th in points allowed at 23.6.

New York is always a circus, and Tebow would be in the spotlight under the big top. The minute he lands at LaGuardia, JFK or Newark, a quarterback controversy ignites with Mark Sanchez.

One sub-par performance from New York’s underachieving incumbent will trigger a groundswell of Tebow support—if you think NFL teams don’t notice these type of things look what happened in Denver where Tebow leapt over Brady Quinn to get under center.

The call for a change at quarterback may even begin in the Jets' locker room, where the support of Sanchez has not exactly been unified or vociferous. Tom Brady and the Patriots also aren’t going away anytime soon.

Tebow should also know you can’t come home again. The Jaguars are also a mess, and may not even be in Jacksonville for much longer.

Once again, Tebow would be embroiled in a quarterback controversy if he chooses the Jaguars. Blaine Gabbert didn’t set the league ablaze last year, but was a first-round pick and, according to numerous reports, is still a top priority.

Most importantly, aside from Maurice Jones-Drew, the Jaguars don’t possess scary talent on either side of the ball. At least Tebow had Von Miller and Elvis Dumervil in Denver.

Green Bay is where Tebow should want to land. It’s one of the few spots where nobody will be calling for him to start. Also, playing for the perennially-contending Packers would only augment Tebow’s reputation as a winner.

For Tebow, Green Bay would be a lot like his freshman season at Florida. Aaron Rodgers is the unquestioned starter, just like Chris Leak was for the Gators.

Tebow can pop in for packages designed specifically for his talents. It worked in Gainesville to the tune of a national title, and could help the Packers get back to the Super Bowl.

No organization’s backups fare better than the Packers. Matt Hasselbeck, Matt Flynn and even Rodgers have parlayed their tenures as Green Bay’s second-string signal-caller into starting positions and lucrative contracts.

Nobody disagrees that Tebow could stand to learn a thing or two about the position.
