Cleveland Cavaliers Trade Rumors: Latest Buzz Ahead of NBA Trade Deadline
The Cleveland Cavaliers look to be one of the most interesting teams in the NBA as the trade deadline rapidly approaches considering the assets they have and the space they have on their roster.
Cleveland currently has two highly valued players who don't necessarily fit into their long-term plans in Antawn Jamison and Ramon Sessions, and beyond that, they have over $7 million in cap space to fiddle with if they're interested in taking on a bad contract.
In Jamison, Cleveland has one of the most valuable expiring contracts, as Jamison is over $15 million of salary coming off their books in the spring, something many teams would enjoy. Beyond that, Jamison is actually playing well and he would be a neat addition to a handful of contending teams who need that stretch 4.
Then there's Ramon Sessions, who will be relegated to a long-distance backup point guard for the Cavs if they're able to re-sign him past this season, but many out there think he could be a decent starter. Sessions is gifted offensively and work with Byron Scott has turned him into a better passer over the past two seasons.
Aside from those two guys, they have a roster full of players they probably would be willing to move, all it would take is the right package coming back in return.
But for now, let's take a look at the rumblings and grumblings we've heard involving the Cleveland Cavaliers so far.
Anderson Varejao Looks to Be Staying Put for Now
1 of 5Before the season started it looked as if Anderson Varejao was going to be a huge piece on the trading block for the Cleveland Cavaliers. He had (and still has) high trade value and would help immensely in the rebuilding of this team.
However, as the season kicked off and the team played better than expected, it was easier to see Varejao in a long-term role with this team, especially since he's signed through 2015 at a very reasonable price.
Then Andy broke his wrist and reports are coming in now that the Cavs aren't interested in dealing the big Brazilian, even as the team is getting a lot of interest from around the league, according to Marc Stein.
For the Cavs, this may be a blessing in disguise, as it means they have a center for at least the near future, and if they decide that they're better off trading him, they still have many years left to do so with Andy who is just in the onset of his prime and is in wine and gold for the foreseeable future.
Ramon Sessions to the Los Angeles Lakers?
2 of 5Ever since acquiring him from Milwaukee with Ryan Hollins for three pieces of gum and a ball of twine (okay, so it was for Bassy Telfair and Delonte West), Ramon Sessions has been a godsend for the Cavaliers.
Averaging 10 points and five assists off the bench for the Cavs this season, Sessions has transformed himself from a guy who can hit a floater in the lane every once in a while to a borderline legitimate NBA starting point guard, which has made a few teams take notice.
Most notably, the Los Angeles Lakers have showed interest in the guard in between their searches for that "home run" trade. The Lakers have shown interest in Kyle Lowry, Rajon Rondo and Deron Williams, but it would take a lot to get those fellows, held in high regard throughout the league.
Sessions has seemingly been the Lakers' fail-safe over the past few weeks, as it seems as if they're content on waiting to give a run at him while they pursue other options.
It seems as if the Lakers are the team most interested in Sessions, but they're skittish to give up the one thing the Cavs want for him, a first-round pick. This, in the end, could all just be bolstering to drive down the price, as other teams are privately and publicly interested in Sessions, as Cleveland has been bombarded with calls inquiring about Sessions and other players.
Ramon Sessions to the Atlanta Hawks?
3 of 5One rumor that has picked up steam over the past few days is that the Atlanta Hawks are interested in a swap involving Ramon Sessions and Marvin Williams.
What's interesting is that a move like this could be the start of a rebuilding phase for the Hawks, or it could just be them trying to shore up their backcourt.
On the one hand, the Hawks could ask for cap flexibility moving forward and want to include Antawn Jamison's expiring contract coming back to them in a larger package.
On the other hand, they could just be looking for a guard to come in off the bench who isn't as ball-dominant as Jeff Teague, who is averaging an assist fewer than Sessions while playing more minutes.
This Hawks team will be interesting to monitor going forward.
Antawn Jamison Yet to Have a Public Suitor?
4 of 5Of the guys out there who have no contractual obligations for next season, Antawn Jamison may be the best one who doesn't have that elite player title like Dwight Howard, Steve Nash, Kevin Garnett and the rest of the guys around the league who will be free agents next season.
Jamison is playing harder and smarter than he was a season ago, plus he has a huge contract coming off the books at the end of the season, which one would think would be a huge driving force for interest from contending teams.
Still, it remains to be seen whether or not the Cavs will deal Jamison, or whether they even have a suitor for the guy as of right now. All that we know is that he likes being in Cleveland and would be happy to stay, according to Jamison himself.
Some Interest Still Left in Chris Kaman?
5 of 5One rumored deal that sort of lived fast and died hard was the thought of Chris Kaman being dealt to the Cleveland Cavaliers.
It's not clear what the Cavs would have put up for the Hornets' big man, nor is it clear whether or not the Cavs still have any interest.
Plus, they still have Anderson Varejao on their roster, who just happens to be a slightly shorter, yet slightly faster, less bald version of Chris Kaman.
As of right now this rumor seems to be dead as a doornail, Smalls, but there's always a possibility.
One thing is for sure, however; as the next few weeks start to really pan out, we're going to see the Cavaliers active in multiple trade talks to improve their team in the long-term.
