Rajon Rondo Trade Rumors: Los Angeles Lakers Need to Reel in the Point Guard
The Golden State Warriors, Orlando Magic, and the Boston Celtics put out news in the last couple hours that they are aggressively shopping some of their players.
While this has nothing to do with the Lakers, it MOST DEFINITELY needs to.
The Lakers have been looking for improvements to their roster. They've said they are going to make a home-run move, then they said they weren't going to make a move, now they are talking tweaks, but this is the opportunity to pull the trigger on not only a Laker changing trade, but a league wide NBA changing trade.
The potential trade here would help every team involved.
Monta Ellis, Pau Gasol, Rondo, David Lee, Ryan Anderson, Biedrins, Jameer Nelson, World Peace and many others would ALL be involved and it would shake up the teams completely. It will probably never happen, mainly Boston wouldn't get enough back, but it would be a fantastic trade for every team.
Boston's Deal
1 of 5The Celtics have come out and said that they want to trade Rondo because he clashes too much with coach Doc Rivers. Personally, I think it is silly to trade the Celtics' best player in favor of keeping their aging Big Three, but they are building for the future.
THE CELTICS WOULD LOSE: Rajon Rondo, Jermaine O'Neal
THE CELTICS WOULD GAIN: From Warriors: Andris Biedrins. From Magic: Jameer Nelson and Ryan Anderson. From Lakers: Steve Blake.
This would give the Celtics a solid starting center in Biedrins, something they haven't had since Kendrick Perkins left and it had hurt them badly.
They would also get a solid point guard replacement and a much better shooter in Jameer Nelson. He would bring veteran leadership to the team, but also some youth and excitement.
Ryan Anderson would give them an excellent power forward off the bench when Kevin Garnett needs to rest or is injured. Steve Blake would give them solid minutes at the backup point guard position, a spot at which they are desperately looking to improve.
The Celtics lose the most in this deal, but they are building towards the future and this would give them a younger, more versatile team.
The Orlando Magic
2 of 5The Magic reported today that they are actively pursuing Monta Ellis in hopes that it will keep Dwight Howard in Orlando longer than the remainder of the season. Dwight has also publicly said that he would love to play with Ellis.
THE MAGIC WOULD LOSE: J.J. Reddick, Ryan Anderson, Jameer Nelson and Hedo Turkoglu.
THE MAGIC WOULD GAIN: From the Warriors: Monta Ellis. From the Lakers: Metta World Peace.
The Magic would finally rid themselves of Hedo, but would gain World Peace in return, who hasn't played very well on offense. However, the defense he brings will be adored by Stan Van Gundy, especially playing in the East with the Chicago Bulls and Miami Heat.
World Peace would defend Luol Deng and would be able to handle LeBron James.
The most important thing is that they would be getting Ellis, a player they can build around and a player that would make the Magic a true contender. Dwight would love it and would probably end up staying around in Orlando for years to come.
Golden State Warriors
3 of 5Mark Jackson has said that he wants Ellis and Stephen Curry to be the backcourt of the future, but it's not working. It's not Jackson's fault, it just wouldn't work for any coach. They've tried it and it is failing. Time to move Ellis now while he is hot.
The Warriors said today that they would only trade Ellis if they got a valuable big in return...a.k.a. Pau Gasol.
THE WARRIORS WOULD LOSE: Monta Ellis, David Lee and Andris Biedrins.
THE WARRIORS WOULD GAIN: From the Lakers: Pau Gasol. From the Magic: J.J. Reddick. From the Celtics: Jermaine O'Neal.
The Warriors would lose their front line, but it's time to move Biedrins, plus, David Lee hasn't panned out as the star he once was in New York.
Getting rid of Ellis means that Curry would be the new star, but he would be the player he is supposed to be if Pau Gasol was on the black.
They would be a fantastic one-two punch, and having Reddick at the 2 means that he would get a lot of open shots. Jermaine O'Neal is a fantastic backup center for this team. He would bring the shot blocking prowess that Coach Jackson has been desperately looking for.
Los Angeles Lakers
4 of 5The Lakers have been looking for a point guard for the last three years, but nobody has fit Phil Jackson's style of a point guard. A guard that doesn't need the ball and can shoot a three...this is not Rondo, but this is no longer Phil Jackson's team. Mike Brown could make Rondo an MVP candidate.
THE LAKERS WOULD LOSE: Pau Gasol, Metta World Peace and Steve Blake.
THE LAKERS WOULD GAIN: From the Celtics: Rajon Rondo. From the Magic: Hedo Turkoglu. From the Warriors: David Lee.
The Lakers would be getting what they need most and that is Rondo, a point guard who can make life easier for Bryant and Bynum.
While they would be losing out on the best all-around big man in the game, they would get a very solid player in David Lee. People forget that David Lee was an all-star on the Knicks.
This trade would officially make Andrew Bynum the No. 2 option. David Lee would slide into the No. 3 option with no problem. He is a great rebounder and can spread the floor with his jumper.
They would have to take on Hedo's hefty contract, but they could amnesty him and his contract, or try and pull off another trade...maybe for Michael Beasley. He is the price you pay to get a player like Rondo. The Lakers should swallow their pride and take Hedo's contract.
How It All Looks on Paper.
5 of 5There would have to be some minor adjustments to the trade to make it work. (ESPN Trade Machine wouldn't function properly. Maybe the trade is too big for the website to load). But the big pieces are there and would make every team happy.
To make things more clear. Here is how the lineups would work after this trade.
