NBA Rumors: Why Don't the Los Angeles Lakers Go After Steve Nash?
It isn't like this is something new, or it started this year. The Los Angeles Lakers have known for a time now that they need a point guard, and that was the whole purpose in acquiring Steve Blake.
Lakers' fans have been patient, but Blake hasn't played like he can—and he hasn't lived up to the expectations of the organization.
After all of the rumors and hype, the Lakers really could and need to trade for Steve Nash.
Gilbert Arenas did get a workout in LA, but so far, the talks have gone just as far as they have with Dwight Howard.
A trade with the Phoenix Suns for Nash could ease the tension and speed up the tempo in Los Angeles.
Metta World Peace supposedly isn't happy and is "walking around all crazy-like." We're just waiting for him to go off, one Lakers' player recently told FOXSportsWest.com—speaking on the condition of anonymity.
The Suns have a starting-caliber point guard in backup Ronnie Price, and could acquire Blake from the Lakers with World Peace. Throw in one of the players off of the young and talented Lakers' bench—and neither team loses in the deal.
For the Lakers, Nash would provide a prominent upgrade; whereas nobody is positive about Arenas.
Nash isn't a specialist on defense, but that is the purpose in keeping both Pau Gasol and Andrew Bynum. Nash, with his speed, even at 38 keeps the young NBA point guards on their heels—making up for his lack of defense with a legitimate, solid, potent offense.
Not only would Nash bring reliable scoring from mid-range and outside the perimeter, his decision making in transition for the Lakers would help the play of Gasol, Matt Barnes and Josh McRoberts.
Whether the two franchises want to trade is the issue now, because the history they've had in the past 10 years isn't all that friendly.
To trade Nash to a contender like the Lakers would show the class of the organization in Phoenix, as opposed to letting one of the games' greats switch to a team for only playoff aspirations.
The Lakers don't have anything to lose in this situation. They could use the services of Nash this year and next. This gives the front office more than enough time to figure out what to do about what is probably the games most important position.
