NBA Trade Scenarios: Deron Williams & 6 Crazy Trades That Could Happen

Joel C. CordesFeb 12, 2012

This NBA season is short, the trade deadline is less than a month away and these six trades are crazy good options for the dozen teams involved.

As Bleacher Report’s resident NBA GM, I’ve recently cooked outside the box with “Plan B” deals for the Los Angeles Lakers and ideas to save Steve Nash.

While these teams may have to move NOW, today’s trades are about taking a chance on that “over the top” acquisition for contenders or a “look to the future” for those already out of the race.

This trade will be hugely unpopular with most New York Knicks fans. However, Jeremy Lin’s overnight ascension gives them some flexibility.

The Knicks already have two other front-line anchors; they’d be wise to add some depth and give Lin a versatile backcourt mate for the future.

The Portland Trail Blazers need another injection of athleticism. They’ll feel bad for moving Marcus Camby, but this deal makes them younger at the center position while finding a more versatile fit at point guard.

The Los Angeles Lakers seem to appear in every trade article under the sun right now—and for good reason.

Rather than minor upgrades like Ramon Sessions, this franchise is used to making big-splash moves. I’ve given this already popular idea a little additional sweetener, thus making it more palatable for the New Jersey Nets.

The Washington Wizards aren’t there yet, but they can reduce headaches, gain a superstar and save some money by taking this opportunity.

The Atlanta Hawks would like this, as it solidifies their front-line long term with or without Al Horford, while also adding a young backcourt mate for Jeff Teague and an expiring contract for next year.

If the Portland Trail Blazers didn’t like the first trade, they certainly couldn’t turn this one down. The Phoenix Suns could remain watchable for this year while gaining assets or cap space in the near future.

Finally, Dwight Howard is the talk of the approaching trade deadline, but I don’t think anyone would anticipate this dark horse deal.

The last time we had a lockout season in 1999, “Twin Towers” took the title. Could it happen again, keep the Orlando Magic afloat and improve the Los Angeles Lakers?

These trades might be crazy.

Crazy like a fox.

As always, leave your comments and ideas. Call me a genius, an idiot or everything in between…
