NBA Rumors: Clippers Would Be Perfect Fit for Newly-Free Kenyon Martin
Not that the Los Angeles Clippers need anymore of a spring in their step, but they have the chance to get even more explosive in landing newly-freed Kenyon Martin.
Yahoo! Sports' Adrian Wojnarowski reports the former Denver Nuggets star has been granted a letter of clearance by FIBA and can immediately return to the NBA.
That good news really only affects a specific portion of the NBA. One lucky team will get a great scorer that can play an uptempo style of basketball. More than that, Martin will be hungry to reassert himself in the Association after a few months meandering in the Chinese Basketball Association.
ESPN The Magazine's Chris Broussard reported the Clippers and Knicks have a shot at Martin who has a list of suitors that includes; the Miami Heat, San Antonio Spurs and Atlanta Hawks. Yahoo! Sports also reported the LA Lakers were a possibility. Broussard writes in the Clippers specifics.
"Martin's priority is to join a contender on which he'll have a sizeable role, according to a person close to Martin. The Clippers and the Knicks can offer the $2.5 million mini-midlevel exception. San Antonio can as well, but it is unlikely to do so because of the luxury tax, sources said. Atlanta is also limited by luxury tax concerns. Miami can only offer the veteran's minimum of $1.4 million.
"
If the Clippers are not in the driver's seat, they are pretty well close to it. Martin has a home in Los Angeles and will be making his decision, hopefully, sometime this weekend.
Wojnarowski cites a league source that continues:
"The Clippers are probably the best place for [Martin] to showcase himself for his next deal. He’s clearly the third-best [big man] without competition from anyone on their roster.
"
It can only help matters that Martin's former teammate and good friend, Chauncey Billups, is on the Clippers at the moment.
The Clippers are already a fantastic team that is explosive on offense and pushes the tempo like no other. They are fourth in the league in scoring, putting up 99 points per contest.
Adding a player like Martin at this point in the season would further solidify them as the top contenders in the West.
