Dwight Howard Trade Request: The 'Superteams' Should Be a Cautionary Tale

Matt PasterJan 13, 2012

The Orlando Magic are now in first place in the Southeast Division after Miami’s loss to the Denver Nuggets on Friday night. They went 3-0 on a West Coast road trip, while the Miami Heat have lost their last three on the road. Dwight Howard needs to look at the "superteams" as a cautionary tale in trying to align himself with another superstar.

There are a few things to consider with "superteams." One is that they require two or three max salary players and leave little room for mid-level role players. It takes more than two or three players to win a championship.

The Miami Heat made it to the NBA Finals last year, but fell short as their lack of depth was a glaring flaw against the Dallas Mavericks.

The Spurs won four championships in nine years with one superstar in Tim Duncan and some very good role players.

Dallas won with one superstar in Dirk Nowitzki and some very good veteran role players.

The Heat have some exceptionally talented players and will most likely be one of the top seeded teams in the East, but championship teams are a collaboration of players, not All-Stars.

It’s the same reason that Lebron James and Carmelo Anthony earned a bronze medal in the 2004 Olympics. Carlos Delfino and Luis Scola won the Gold with Argentina. Giacomo Galanda and Nikola Radulović won the Silver for Italy. Who are Giacomo Galanda and Nikola Radulović? My point exactly.

The Knicks are 20-20 in the stretch since acquiring Carmelo Anthony. The Magic are 27-13 in that same stretch.

I don’t see the Knicks as being a dominant team anytime in the near future and don’t believe that they’ll be any better than a five seed in the playoffs this season.

If it’s truly “winning” that Dwight’s looking for, the grass may appear to be greener on the other side.

If it’s big market that he’s looking for then he should go to LA or Brooklyn.

Dwight needs to make clear what it is exactly that he wants. Unfortunately for the Orlando Magic, I'm not sure that he knows himself.
