Caitlin Clark: 'Never Feel Like' I'm in a Shooting Funk amid 0-3 Start to WNBA Season

Jack MurrayMay 18, 2024

Caitlin Clark is not going to let herself get hung up on a few missed shots.

Following her Indiana Fever's 91-80 loss to the New York Liberty on Saturday, Clark said that she wasn't thinking about struggles shooting prior to the game because she did not notice them.

"Honestly, I never feel like I'm ever in a shooting funk," Clark told reporters after the game. "They either go in or they don't. I don't lose my confidence."

She elaborated by saying that made shots can be a boost early in the game, which can be helpful as the contests get deeper.

"It's always good to see the ball go in the hole," Clark said. "Especially early in the game as a scorer, that gives you a little boost of confidence and gives you an extra pep in your step."

Clark scored 22 points, eight assists and six rebounds in the Fever's loss. She went 9-of-17 shooting and 4-of-10 from three-point range. This was her best performance of the short season, as she had scored 20 and nine points in the first two games. She was shooting 30.4 percent on field goals and 27.8 percent from three-point range in those contests.

Her efforts and improvement helped the Fever stay close, but in the end the team did fall to 0-3 on the season. She did not lose three consecutive games once in her collegiate career at Iowa, although this isn't necessarily a surprise.

The Fever took Clark with the No. 1 pick in the 2024 WNBA Draft and earned that selection for a reason. The Fever went 13-27 in 2023, and had won less than 10 games in the prior three seasons. The franchise has not secured a record above .500 since 2015.

With that in mind, a quick turnaround was not likely and it will likely be a process for the team to reach the heights Clark reached with the Hawkeyes. Still, some improvements in shooting efficiency was a big step for Clark and she will look to continue that momentum going forward.
