NBA Trade Rumors: Maloof Brothers Wrong to Hold DeMarcus Cousins Hostage
The Kings are not a good fit for DeMarcus Cousins, they never were. When he was drafted fifth overall in 2010, the roster was too young, and it still is. Cousins needs an environment with a strong Head Coach and strong veteran leadership, the Kings have neither.
To shoot down trade talks before they can start was not a smart move by Joe Maloof. It would have been ideal if the Kings contacted Danny Ainge in Boston or R.C. Buford in San Antonio to gauge interest on the talented but immature Cousins.
The Celtics seemed to be interested in moving Rajon Rondo for Chris Paul. Would they entertain a deal for Cousins? It is certainly worth finding out, if you're Sacramento.
Cousins would behave under Doc Rivers and Kevin Garnett, and he'd be forced to mature, because he would be surrounded by more professional influences. Bringing Cousins in would allow the Celtics to bring both Ray Allen and Garnett back for less money (both are free agents at the end of the year), while returning Garnett back to power forward with Cousins in the middle.
In Sacramento, he is headed for Derrick Coleman status. Coleman was a solid player for the Nets, Hornets and 76ers, but he never truly reached the level many expected of him. So, while you could never call him a bust, you could never call him a star either. That is what he and Cousins should be known as. It's funny they share the same initials, but the older DC was even a bit more mature than the current one.
The Kings would be better off trading Cousins. That is the best thing for the team and Cousins' career. He will never be a star in Sacramento.
