Winter Classic Jerseys 2012: Retro Look Makes Rangers vs. Flyers Game Unique
The NHL's annual Winter Classic was a great idea that brought the game some much-needed positive publicity. But after so many years, it was time to make a slight adjustment to make it better. That is why the new retro uniforms that will be worn by the New York Rangers and Philadelphia Flyers are so important.
The action on the ice is obviously the most important thing, but there has to be a hook to draw in the audience. Playing the game outside is a start, but the novelty does wear thin after you have seen it a few times.

Retro uniforms have also become a staple of this game, but the look that the Rangers and Flyers have found is personally my favorite in the Winter Classic's history. Particularly the Flyers, who are playing in their second Winter Classic.
They didn't do anything fancy with their uniforms when they went to Fenway Park to play the Boston Bruins in 2010. It was just a by-the-numbers look with a few minor tweaks.
This year, though, they have gone all out to make sure that fans remember their look. That is exactly what this game needs.
The Rangers are using a slightly altered version of the uniforms they wore in the 1920s. I have always found that look to be better for them anyway. It doesn't have to scream at you to be something special.
In fact, subtlety is much better for a jersey. Teams like the Oregon Ducks are trying to get attention for their outrageous looks, but it always takes away from the game instead of adding to it.
The way a team looks is supposed to be a part of their identity, and the Rangers and Flyers are giving us a glimpse at their past, present and future with the jerseys they will be displaying on Monday afternoon.
