Rex Ryan's New York Jets: How They Match Up Against the Miami Dolphins

Stephen SmithDec 31, 2011

New York Jets fans realize the dire situation Gang Green is facing all too well.

As Rex Ryan's contingent trudges into South Beach to face the Miami Dolphins tomorrow following their devastating loss to the Giants last week, they realize they need a minor miracle to make the NFL playoffs.

We all know the scenario by now.

First and foremost, the Jets must beat their bitter division rivals and then receive all kinds of assistance to sneak into the playoffs. The Ravens must beat the Bengals, the Texans must defeat the Titans, and either the Broncos must lose to the Chiefs or the Raiders lose to the Chargers, and New York is in.

Yes, that's all.

So, let's break down the Jets-Dolphins contest and see how New York matches up with the pesky Fins.

When the Jets have the ball:

Mark Sanchez's struggles this season have been well-documented but he has a good chance of having a solid game against the Dolphins. Miami is ranked 26th against the pass and is allowing almost 250 yards a game through the air, including 22 touchdowns. Look for the third-year signal-caller to spot Santonio Holmes for slants and Dustin Keller over the middle. Holmes had 63 receiving yards and a TD in the Jets' victory over Miami earlier this season, while Keller chipped in with 51 yards on a pair of catches. Plaxico Burress is dangerous in the red zone and has eight TD catches in all.

The problem the Jets will face is running the ball effectively because Miami is allowing just 93.4 yards per game (YPG) and eight touchdowns defensively all season. Shonn Greene is one yard shy of 1,000 rushing yards for the season but only averaged 3.5 yards a carry vs. Miami earlier this year. LaDainian Tomlinson may be playing in his last game and is dangerous still as a pass receiving threat in the backfield.

When the Dolphins have the ball:

The Jets caught a big break when it was learned that Reggie Bush will miss the game with a right knee injury he suffered last week vs. New England. Bush was having a break-through season, topping the 1,000 yard rushing mark for the first time in his six-year career while adding seven touchdowns. Rookie Daniel Thomas will have to step in and generate Miami's ground attack against a Jets defense that has allowed 17 rushing touchdowns.

Matt Moore has had a solid season for the Fins - he became the starter in week four - with 15 touchdown passes and seven interceptions. He has a tall order tomorrow though going up against Gang Green's fifth-ranked passing defense, which has allowed only 14 touchdowns in 2011. Brandon Marshall found success against the Jets on Oct. 17 with six catches for 109 yards. He should be matched up with all-world cornerback Darrelle Revis, who returned an interception 100 yards for a score in that contest.

Tight end Anthony Fasano could have a solid game because the Jets are very vulnerable against tight ends over the middle. Fasano has five touchdown receptions on the season and is averaging 15.7 yards a catch. The Jets will have to account for him.
