Manchester United Transfers: 10 Players Linked to Red Devils in January

0 of 10

Manchester United only managed a draw against Newcastle United at home thanks to a poor penalty decision from the referee, which led to the Magpies' equalizer.

However, the good news was that Manchester City did not extend their lead at the top, which means that United can still overhaul their rivals to win the Premiership. The Red Devils have not been at their best, but they have shown in the past that they can maintain consistency in the important periods.

One of the major reasons why United have been very successful under Sir Alex Ferguson is that they have been excellent in the second half of the season after Christmas when many other teams tend to fade. The challenge presented by Roberto Mancini's Manchester City is huge considering the immense depth in their squad, and though United do have a strong squad, Ferguson could look for quality players in the January transfer window.

It is possible that new players who arrive in January can contribute to a strong finish to the season, and if they can sign the right players, then they would certainly have a better chance of winning the title. Ferguson is one of the most astute managers in the game, and the Red Devils could make a couple of intelligent signings in January.

This is a list of 10 players who have been linked with a move to Old Trafford in this January.

Milos Krasic (Juventus)

1 of 10

Milos Krasic is one of Serbia's best players, and he certainly has the quality to be influential at the highest level. The Serbian midfielder signed for Juventus only in 2010, but with the Serbian international not featuring in many games under new manager Antonio Conte, he could be open to a move to the Premiership.

According to the Mirror, Manchester United and Chelsea have been linked with a move for Krasic, and with his agent not ruling out a move, it is possible that United could target him in January.

However, Juventus are not likely to let him leave on a bargain fee, and also, at the age of 27, he might look for a club which offers him regular football. Also, the presence of Ashley Young, Luis Nani and Antonio Valencia means that United do have depth in wide positions, with Ryan Giggs and Park Ji Sung also capable of playing there.

Mario Goetze (Borussia Dortmund)

2 of 10

Mario Goetze has established himself as one of the best young players in the game, and his performances for Borussia Dortmund have been one of the factors why the Bundesliga club has performed excellently in the last year, with them winning the Bundesliga title in the previous season.

The 19-year-old midfielder is one of the world's most talented young players, and it is unsurprising that he is monitored by plenty of clubs around the world.

According to the this report, Arsenal and Real Madrid are interested in the German midfielder, but Manchester United are also monitoring him and could make a move in the January transfer window.

Sir Alex Ferguson has been instrumental in the development of several youngsters, helping them realize their potential, and Goetze could be a great signing for United in the long term as well.

Ricky Van Wolfswinkel (Sporting Lisbon)

3 of 10

Ricky van Wolfswinkel is another player who has been linked with a move to Old Trafford, and according to the Metro, he has attracted interest from the Premier League, with Manchester United and Chelsea apparently interested in the striker. The Dutch ace has been prolific for the Portuguese club this season and is regarded to be a player of high potential.

Manchester United do have a number of talented young players in their squad, with Javier Hernandez and Danny Welbeck both important first team players for the first team. However, they could target Van Wolfswinkel, considering that he is a player of high potential and Sir Alex Ferguson has signed some bright young talents in his career.

The 22-year-old Dutch striker is valued at around £11 million, which should not be a problem for United if they are convinced of the potential of the striker.

Manolo Gabbiadini (Atalanta)

4 of 10

According to the MetroManchester United are apparently interested in acquiring young Italian U-21 international Manolo Gabbiadini in the near future after the striker's impressive performances for his club, Atalanta. Manchester United are reportedly preparing a bid of around  £9 million to bring the 19-year-old striker to Old Trafford.

Gabbiadini, who had an excellent loan spell previously at Cittadella, has adjusted to the demands of the Serie A, performing impressively for Atalanta. Also, his record of 10 goals in 13 appearances for the Italy U-21 side is sure to attract the interest of plenty of clubs in the future as well.

With Dimitar Berbatov not receiving much playing time and the injury-prone Michael Owen in the twilight of his career, the addition of this young striker could be important for the future.

Neven Subotic (Borussia Dortmund)

5 of 10

Manchester United have very rarely suffered humiliating defeats, especially at home, which is why it was a surprise to see the Red Devils crumble against their rivals, Manchester City, at Old Trafford.

The defense, which did not consist of captain Nemanja Vidic, was still quite experienced, with Rio Ferdinand and Patrice Evra in the backline. However, they were spectacularly bad against City, and questions have been raised regarding Ferdinand's long term future after his unconvincing performances.

Borussia Dortmund defender Neven Subotic could be targeted by Manchester United considering that he is a very dominant centre back and also has a decent understanding with Nemanja Vidic due to them playing together for Serbia. Dortmund will be reluctant to sell an important player, especially at low cost, and will demand maximum price for the talented defender.

The Red Devils manager, Sir Alex Ferguson, could either splash the money to sign Subotic or place the faith in the quality of Chris Smalling and Phil Jones to establish themselves as starters for the Red Devils.

Javi Martinez (Athletic Bilbao)

6 of 10

According to the Daily Mail, Manchester United are apparently interested in a move for Athletic Bilbao midfielder Javi Martinez, who has established himself as one of the most important players for the club. Martinez, who does have an impressive work rate, not only performs his defensive duties, but can also help in distribution in midfield and also has a good attacking game.

There are a number of clubs interested in acquiring the 23-year-old midfielder, who is also tall at 6'3" and could cope with the physicality of the league. However, there are a number of clubs like Manchester City and Chelsea who are interested in the midfielder, and it will be difficult to sign the talented midfielder in the January transfer window, though it cannot be ruled out.

Jordi Alba (Valencia)

7 of 10

Valencia's Jordi Alba is apparently attracting the attention of the current Premiership champions Manchester United, and the defender, who also recently played against England for Spain, could be targeted for the long term by the Red Devils.

Though Patrice Evra still remains a top performer, he has not had his best season according to his high standards, and the United manager could be interested in Alba to provide more competition and also as a long-term replacement.

He can also play as a left midfielder and could provide more depth if he is signed by the Red Devils. Alba has the experience of playing in the Champions League, and the 22-year-old defender will only continue to progress with experience, especially if he plays under a manager like Sir Alex Ferguson.

Though he could be a useful signing, Valencia would be reluctant to let the defender leave on a bargain.

Klaas-Jan Huntelaar (Schalke)

8 of 10

According to the Daily Mail, Manchester United are apparently interested in a move for Dutch striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, who has been prolific for Schalke this season. The Manchester United manager is apparently a long term admirer of the 28-year-old striker, who has rediscovered his prolific goalscoring form following difficult spells at both Real Madrid and AC Milan.

According to that report, they could offer their out-of-favor striker Dimitar Berbatov in a swap deal, which could be more attractive for the Bundesliga club. With Michael Owen also injury-prone, United could do well to bring an experienced striker to the club, and Huntelaar in his current form would certainly be a potent option for the Red Devils.

Lucas Moura (Sao Paulo)

9 of 10

Lucas Moura is one of the best talents currently playing in the Brazilian league, and a move to one of the top European clubs does seem to be on the cards if he continues his form. The midfielder's performances have been recognized, and he has also made appearances for the Brazil national team. The 19-year-old talented midfielder has attracted the attention of plenty of clubs, and he could move to Europe in this January transfer window.

According to the Mirror, Premiership clubs Liverpool and Manchester United are interested in the youngster, while there are many others like Inter Milan or PSG who could also target the Brazil international.

However, Sao Paulo are determined to hold on to the midfielder, but an approach from United might be hard to resist, as they would provide the youngster to play at one of the biggest clubs in the world.

Gaitan (Benfica)

10 of 10

According to, FC Barcelona and Manchester United are both interested in Benfica midfielder Gaitan, who will not be available at a bargain price. The 23-year-old midfielder has also been called up to the Argentina national team, and if he continues to progress, he could be one of the best midfielders in the world in the future.

He was impressive against Manchester United in the Champions League under the watchful gaze of Sir Alex Ferguson, and it is not a surprise that he has attracted the attention of two of the biggest clubs in the world.

He recently signed a new one-year contract extension with the Portuguese club, but he does have a release clause in his contract worth around £38.7 million. It is uncertain whether United or the Blaugrana would pay such a high amount of money to attract the midfielder considering that they could have many other players as targets as well.

However, Gaitan is a quality player, and if the price is right, there might be a number of top clubs who will be interested.
