Mexican Soccer: Predicting This Week's Matchups

0 of 9

Today, Jornada Seis (Round Six) begins. This round will really separate teams in terms of standings and who will be considered a "favorite."

Though the games aren't that appealing this week. with one third of this tournament being over after the weekend, it's safe to say nobody is safe. Let's take a look at which teams I believe will win their match and preview their encounter.

Estudiantes Tecos vs Pachuca

1 of 9

    Preview:

The game will be held at Tecos' stadium, 3er de Marzo (Third of March) today at 6:00. The most important thing you should look out for is Tecos' game plan. They have lost their two previous home games. If they do win, Tecos will move up into fourth place. Yet, being the opening match of the round, they won't stay there for long if they can get a win. For Pachuca, if they can win, you will see them move up into the third place of the overall leaderboard.

    Prediction:

I'm looking for Tecos to once again lose on their home grass. It will be a rather even matchup, but I doubt that they can beat a pumped Pachuca squad who beat Toluca 3-0 at last week's match.

Cruz Azul vs Tijuana

2 of 9

    Preview:

Cruz Azul will yet again look for a victory at home. They have won their last two games at home and look to humiliate the Xolos from Tijuana. You can call it a youth vs. experience game, as the Rookie Xolos look to upset Cruz Azul and prove that they belong in the First Division.

    Prediction:

Both teams come from a tie but Cruz Azul has double the points that the Xolos have. If the Xolos were to win, they can move up into the Top Eight in the league. However, if Cruz Azul wins, they will move up into first place so I'm taking the older, experienced Cruz Azul since it's more necessary for them to get a win and also because they simply are the better team.

Jaguares vs Queretaro

3 of 9

    Preview:

Not an appealing matchup, but this is important to both teams. For Jaguares, they are in desperate need of a win after their poor start in the tournament. They currently rank 16th overall and with a win, they vault go into the Top Eight of the league. Queretaro has a new coach after the surprise dismissal of Gustavo Matosas.

    Prediction:

Since both teams are lackluster clubs at the moment, they will tie. Queretaro because of their new, debuting coach and Jaguares because they can't find out who they are in this tournament.

Guadalajara vs Monterrey

4 of 9

    Preview:

This will be a very interesting matchup. The outcome of this match will determine who could be in the Top Three. With Chivas de Guadalajara, you have a team that beat Morelia—even with nine guys on the pitch! They showed incredible resiliency and have not lost a game in this tournament. Monterrey, on the other hand, lost last week and will try to secure a top place in the standings.

    Prediction:

Both teams seem even at the moment. With Chivas not losing one game so far, they will try to continue thal. However, Monterrey will tie with them, not separating the teams much.

Santos vs Morelia

5 of 9

    Preview:

Oribe Perlata and Santos come fired up after their tie against Pumas. Yeah, you might say, "Why would anyone be fired up after a tie?" It's simple, really. Mainly because if Santos wins, they can reach the second slot in the league. Not only that, but Perlata is the leading goal scorer in the league so expect big play from him. Morelia is down with only three points. They need a win, badly! Whatever they can do to win will be crucial.

    Prediction:

Even though Morelia is hungry for a win, they won't be enough of a challenge for Santos. Expect another goal from Perlata and Santos to defeat Morelia in front of their home fans.

Tigres vs San Luis

6 of 9

    Preview:

Tigres struck gold in this one. They have recently acquired Mexican native Carlos Salcido. He brings a lot to the table including experience, great defense and leadership. He can immediately gain the title of the leader role and I'm anxious to find out how he's going to fit in with National Mexican teammate, Jorge Torres Nilo, and Tigres. However, they haven't won a home game nor has San Luis won an away game.

    Prediction:

I'm going with Tigres on this one. They will escape this game though. San Luis will probably be on top for most of the game, but Tigres will come back and win. Their defense will be largely improved so I can't wait to see how this game goes down.

Pumas vs Puebla

7 of 9

    Preview:

Pumas still looks to be the top dog in the league. If they were to win, they'd have 14 points and separate themselves from the pack. Puebla can hope for something because they haven't been a great team in this tournament. They rank as one of the worst and need to prove something fast!

    Prediction:

Pumas will once again win because they have shown they're the best team in the league, so far. Maybe Puebla has a chance. But a small one.

Toluca vs Atlante

8 of 9

    Preview:

Both teams find themselves in the bottom of the league. However, Atlante reside at the last place of the standings. How? You tell me. It's strange how they can't find a win. As for Toluca, they will play without Sinha after his suspension from last game. Not an interesting matchup, in my opinion.

    Prediction:

Atlante will get an interesting win over Toluca. They're waiting to sprout in this tournament and this is a huge chance to do so. Toluca will fail to capitalize on opportunities.

America vs Atlas

9 of 9

    Preview:

This will be the final game of round six as America looks to overcome their recent struggles. For the weirdest reason, America find themselves in the middle of the league as it seems they can't find any solutions. Coming off a tie in which they could have won against Tigres, America finally have a chance to win and get into the Top Eight in the league. For Atlas, it's also been a slow start as they only have four points overall. They too are hungry for a win and will leave it all on the field.

    Prediction:

I'm going with America on this one. They need to reestablish themselves as the high-quality team that made them so hated in Mexico. If this can happen, they will be a more intimidating as well as powerful team. It also depends on "El Maestro" Carlos Reinoso's job. I see it like this: Two more screw-ups in a row and he could find himself without a job.
