Liverpool Transfer Talk: 5 Centre-Backs Kenny Dalglish Could Look to Sign

1 of 6

Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish has invested and improved in a lot of areas of his squad this transfer season. One area he has yet to build on, however, is in the centre of defense.

Fans are screaming out for a new one, and rumours have been swirling because of it.

Here are five players who Liverpool have been linked with and who would improve the team.

5. Ryan Shawcross

Stoke centre-back Ryan Shawcross has really come into his own as his team's captain. The 23-year-old has developed into one of the better defenders in the league under Tony Pulis.

A string of impressive seasons has led him to be linked with several of the Premier League's top clubs. Manchester United were rumoured to be looking to bring him back before they signed Phil Jones, and Dalglish was trying to sign him in January.

He would bring good size to the Liverpool back four. Together with Daniel Agger, he would create an intimidating pairing in the heart of Liverpool's defense.

He is rumoured to be Dalglish's first choice.

4. Neven Subotic

The 22-year-old Serbian defender has become hot property in Europe after leading Borussia Dortmund to a Bundesliga title. He led a young team through a dominant season and became a force to be reckoned with.

At 6'4", Subotic is one of the biggest and most powerful centre backs in Europe. He plays a style that would fit in well in the Premier League. Chelsea reportedly tried to sign him for £17.5 million in January, but their offer was turned down. Arsenal have also been interested.

It may be difficult for Liverpool to get him. He may want to stay in Dortmund as they can offer Champions League football.

3. Scott Dann

Dann is a strong defender who impressed with Birmingham last season. Their relegation almost certainly means the Liverpool-born defender will join fellow ex-Birmingham centre back Roger Johnson at the St Andrews exit door.

Liverpool have been linked with the 24-year-old all summer, but Dalglish decided strengthened his midfield first. Liverpool's outrageous 15 goals given up in six games has put the Scot on alert, and he is scrambling to find a solution.

Dann is well known to have played on defensively stingy teams in his past.

2. Per Mertesacker

5 of 6

With his size, Mertesacker is an incredible defender. At 6'6", he is mobile and good with his feet, something that is often difficult to find in a 6'6" defender.

Like Subotic, Mertesacker would create an intimidating central defensive pairing with Daniel Agger. The sky would be the limit. He can also be aggressive offensively and has shown a knack for scoring.

His height presence would be very welcome at Anfield.

1. Gary Cahill

6 of 6

The 25-year-old has been heavily rumoured to be on the way out of the Reebok Stadium since last summer, with all four of England's top clubs having registered their interest. Liverpool have tabled bids before, but Bolton have always held strong on a price that no one seems willing to spend.

In the past three seasons, Cahill has made 111 appearances in Bolton's white, scoring an impressive 11 goals. He made his England debut against Ghana on the 29th of April this year.

At 6'2", Cahill would add significant stealth to the Liverpool defense. His strength is one of the main reasons he has been so sought after.
