Manchester United: Phil Jones Deserves a Starting Spot on Alex Ferguson's Team

Manchester United and manager Sir Alex Ferguson acquired Phil Jones from Blackburn Rovers for £16.5 million during the transfer window.

He is believed to be a bench player who might occasional start, but he deserves to be considered in the starting 11.

Jones prefers to play central defense, but can play multiple positions.

It may be hard to crack the United starting lineup this season, but the 19-year-old will need to shine bright when his opportunity rises.

Here are a few reasons why he deserves to be considered a starter for Six Alex Ferguson.

No 3: Phil Jones Brings Youth to Manchester United

Phil Jones is only 19 years of age. His youthful play will provide a spark, when needed, for Manchester United.

Youth, energy and strength will all be brought to the pitch when Jones gets some playing time.

Rio Ferdinand is 32, Patrice Evra is 30, Michael Carrick is 30 and Nemanja Vidic isn't a spring chicken anymore; he will turn 30 in October.

No 2: Phil Jones Is a Strong, Powerful Defender

A team can never have enough defensive weapons at their disposal. Phil Jones would provide more ammunition for Sir Alex Ferguson and Manchester United.

At 5'11", Jones provides the aerial side of defending to go along with his overall defensive game. He would be a solid addition for Six Alex Ferguson, even if his role would be strictly off the bench.

No 1: Phil Jones Can Play Multiple Positions

Phil Jones' ability to play defensive back and midfield allows him to play multiple positions for Sir Alex Ferguson and Manchester United.

He prefers to play central defense, but I don't think he would care as long as he got playing time.

Whether he is given the opportunity to play either of those positions weekly will be seen. He must play well, he must capitalize on his opportunities and he must be able to stay healthy in order to get his chances.
