Manchester City Transfer News: Is Sergio Aguero the Right Man for City?

Sam WestmorelandJul 27, 2011

Manchester City have literally been linked to every major transfer target during this summer's transfer window, but for the first two months of the period, they had yet to seal the deal on any of those targets. Everyone from Alexis Sanchez and Javier Pastore to Samir Nasri and Wesley Sneijder had turned them down, and Blues fans were getting nervous.

That inability to seal the deal on top targets finally seemed to come to an end on Wednesday, as Atletico Madrid superstar striker Sergio Aguero has nearly agreed to terms with the Eastlands club to join them on a five-year deal.

Multiple media outlets reported that the clubs agreed to a £38 million deal to bring the talented goal-scorer to City, and the Argentine star flew to Manchester to pass a medical Wednesday.

Aguero tweeted a confirmation that a deal was nearly done later in the day, according to a Mirror Football report.

"

I'm already a City player. Happy to be in this club & this city.

Thanks everyone for the welcome and reception.

"

But now that City have their top transfer target all but in the fold, is he the right man to help City make a major impact on the European stage next season? The Blues are eager to make a serious impact in their Champions League debut next season, and saw Aguero as a potential long-term replacement for want-away striker Carlos Tevez, but is he up to the task?

Few players have displayed a nose for goal as finely tuned as Aguero. The 23-year-old Argentine star has scored 20 or more goals in each of the last four seasons, including 27 goals last season. He's incredibly skilled in the air and with the ball at his feet, and has the kind of powerful shot that can produce goals from pretty much anywhere on the pitch.

But Aguero isn't just a goal scorer, he's also delivered a solid assist total in recent seasons. His passing is excellent when he feels like passing the ball, and he's a stellar playmaker, particularly when he's operating in minimal space. He creates chances for himself and his teammates with his explosive speed, and his ball-handling is sublime as well.

There are some warts on the Argentine star, though. His focus has long been an issue, as he tends to slide in and out of games on occasion. He has been called selfish with the ball at his feet, and occasionally tries to do too much to get his shot off.

But, few would claim that the talented striker's flaws are anything more than minor. He's an incredibly dynamic talent, and at age 23, he's still got room to improve. Aguero's talents are immense, and he's already one of the most dangerous strikers in the sport.

There are few players in the world who can fill the considerable boots of Carlos Tevez (who appears destined to leave City before the summer ends at this stage of the game), but Aguero has the skills to do it.

The Argentine youngster is well worth the £38 million price tag City paid to get him, and as long as he stays healthy, he figures to thrive at Eastlands for the duration of what is believed to be a five-year deal.
