6 Biggest EPL Transfer Sagas: Neymar, Fabregas, Tevez, Nasri, Modric, Aguero
It used to be that summers were a resting place for English football. OK, there were World Cups every four years to focus on, but generally speaking, we were allowed to think about something else for a brief moment.
Not anymore. These days, the transfer window is an event itself. Some football websites get more traffic during the offseason than they do in game time. That should tell you everything.
When you think about it, the transfer window sells hope. Who doesn't want to wake up to the news that a world-class player could be on the way to their beloved club next season?
It doesn't seem to matter that the vast majority of transfer gossip is just that. We live in hope for the fantastical rumor that becomes reality, but for the most part, we end up disappointed.
Here are the six men who've been most prominent in Premier League transfer gossip this summer. You'll notice a common thread...
Cesc Fabregas
1 of 6The Cesc Fabregas saga has been Groundhog Day back-page fodder for two straight seasons now, and this summer's sequel has been just as frustrating as the first.
The player wants to leave Arsenal. Barcelona want to buy him. But as of yet, the two clubs have failed to agree anything close to resembling terms.
Barca are reportedly still certain they'll get him, and to be honest, let's hope they do. The thought of this one dragging on for another summer is too dreadful to contemplate.
Carlos Tevez
2 of 6Carlos Tevez isn't happy at Manchester City. He wants to be nearer his two children in Argentina, and his relationship with Roberto Mancini isn't doing wonders for either of them.
It looked like Corinthians would be the team to make it happen, but when that deal fell through, you began to wonder if anybody would shell out the huge transfer fee and astronomical wages it will take to land him.
The saga runs on...
Neymar
3 of 6Brazilian teenager Neymar has been box office gold in the transfer window this summer.
The 19-year-old had already been subject to an offer from Chelsea last season when he put in a star turn for the national team against Scotland.
Chelsea were apparently keen to come back in for him, while Real Madrid and Barcelona were also linked with a move for the Santos player.
Luka Modric
4 of 6Luka Modric wants to leave Tottenham; this we know.
The problem is the club's chairman, Daniel Levy, is adamant that the Croatian stays and helps his team continue their ascendancy under Harry Redknapp.
Manchester United have been linked to the midfielder, but it's Chelsea who've been the most vigorous in their attempts to land him.
According to this report, the Blues are ready to make offer number three for the midfielder—this time, the number is £27 million.
Samir Nasri
5 of 6Samir Nasri is still weighing up whether to sign a new deal at Arsenal or move elsewhere.
The 24-year-old has been in heavy rotation on the gossip pages, and he's done little to quell the rampant speculation. The suggestion is very much that he'd like to leave.
Manchester United and Manchester City are said to be leading the race for the French midfielder, with this report at the Daily Mail website claiming United's Patrice Evra is trying to sway a move to Old Trafford.
Arsene Wenger has already said there's no way Nasri would go to United though, so if anybody's going to get him, it seems likely to be City.
Sergio Aguero
6 of 6Breaking news from the Sky Sports website—Sergio Aguero is set to fly into London for talks with Manchester City officials about a possible move to the Premier League.
City are apparently ready to pay nearly £40 million for the 23-year-old Atletico Madrid striker, regardless of whether Carlos Tevez leaves or not.
If a deal is struck, it will end a summer of speculation that has seen the Argentine linked to Chelsea, Barcelona and Real Madrid, amongst others.
Could he be the first of the six to sign on the dotted line?
