Liverpool Transfers: Top 8 Players Kenny Dalglish Should Target This Summer

Neri SteinJul 19, 2011

Liverpool FC has already added Charlie Adam, Jordan Henderson and Stewart Downing to its ranks this summer, but Kenny Dalglish and his staff are far from done in this transfer window.

There's still a little over a month left in the window, and the Reds are still in need of some defensive help and a some insurance up front is never a bad idea.

Let's take a look at some players King Kenny should be looking at before the deadline.

Jose Enrique

1 of 8

Newcastle's Spanish left-back Jose Enrique has been rumored to be leaving the Magpies since last season ended, and Liverpool have been heavy favorites to sign him.

Gael Clichy has moved to Manchester City, so Arsenal may be in the running for Enrique as well, but Liverpool's need for a left-back are plain for everyone to see.

He's a quick, skillful defender who gets forward to help the attack but does not get caught out at the back often.

He's got plenty of Premier League experience, but he reportedly wants Champions League football, which could give the edge to Arsenal.

He's not the only left-back Liverpool have been eyeing though.

Aly Cissokho

2 of 8

Reports are back and forth over whether or not Liverpool is interested in Lyon left-back Aly Cissokho, but he's worth the attention.

The French international is only 23 years old, but he's already played for top European clubs like Porto and Lyon and has been hunted by Milan.

He's speedy and would certainly provide plenty of crosses for Andy Carroll up front.

Kenny Dalglish may have turned his attention elsewhere for the time being, but Cissokho is definitely worth another look.

Diego Godin

3 of 8

With Jamie Carragher getting older, Daniel Agger batting injuries and Sotirios Kyrgiakos not really reliable for full-time duty, a center-back would be a smart purchase by Liverpool this summer.

Atletico Madrid's Diego Godin has been on the Red's radar this summer, and at 25, he could be a potential replacement for Carra in the next few years.

The Uruguayan has a commanding physical presence and is speedy for a central defender, and he has plenty of experience in big competitions despite such a young age.

However, purchasing a dependable left-back would likely move Glen Johnson back to the right and Martin Kelly into his natural center-back position.

A left-back is certainly more important, but an extra center-back is never a bad investment.

Santi Cazorla

4 of 8

Liverpool took care of some of its width problems by signing left winger Stewart Downing from Aston Villa last week, but balance is needed.

Villareal's Santi Cazorla can play just behind the strikers and on either side and would be spectacular in Kenny Dalglish's attack-minded game.

He could play down the right opposite Downing, providing plenty of crosses for Andy Carroll in the center and setting up play for Luis Suarez. It would also put Dirk Kuyt back in his natural position up front.

Cazorla would certainly be pricey, but his distribution and speed make him worth the look.

Aaron Lennon

5 of 8

English right winger Aaron Lennon would probably be preferred by Kenny Dalglish to Santi Cazorla and not just because he'd cost less.

Lennon has plenty of Premier League experience with Tottenham and racks up assists. He dominates left-backs with his pace, and at 24, he is just entering the prime of his career.

Harry Redknapp probably wouldn't be keen on selling to a rival though.

Adam Johnson

6 of 8

Adam Johnson was only signed by Manchester City last summer, but there's a new flavor of the month every week over there, so he could be on the outs this summer, and he's someone Kenny Dalglish should take note of.

The right winger cuts inside better than anyone which would provide room for right-back Glen Johnson to move up and add another person to the attack.

He's got a good outside shot, but his real worth is in his pace and ability to get away from defenders.

Jeffren

7 of 8

Jeffren, the Barcelona and Spain winger, is no longer wanted at Camp Nou, and he put on a show for potential suitors at eh the European U-21 Championships this summer.

He can play as a forward or a winger, both of which could be of use to Liverpool.

He has great crossing ability, speed and an impressive goal tally for a limited number of appearances.

Given that Barca are shopping him around, Kenny Dalglish would be wise to take a look.

Peter Odemwingie

8 of 8

Peter Odemwingie had a breakout year in his first in England last year, scoring 15 goals, all in the league, for West Brom.

He proved he has a good eye for goal and can play either up front or out wide.

Liverpool in recent years has been too reliant on a small group of players, especially when it comes to putting it in the back of the net, and adding a player who can score from all over the pitch can fix that almost at once.

Roy Hodgson would certainly hate letting him go though, especially to Liverpool.
