Arsenal Transfers: Gervinho Signing Is Nice, but Arsenal Need More
Arsenal has made it official.
Gervinho is a Gunner.
The Ivorian and former Lille attacker was linked to a few clubs this summer, but the Gunners showed the most serious interest.
While this signing may shake up things in attack, and give Wenger more options, it is far from what is needed to mold Arsenal into a championship squad.
Wenger still has to fight off approaches for both Francesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri. If both go, some serious replacements will be needed.
Wenger has said that he will keep both, but, until the transfer window ends, and they both suit up in an Arsenal jersey, that is a promise that will be hard to keep.
Wenger has already let go one of the squads starting defenders in Gael Clichy, but it is not a massive loss.
Arsene has shown that he knows when it is time to let a player go. However, there needs to be a serious effort made in the market for defensive cover.
Wenger has said he will put his trust in Kieran Gibbs and Armand Traore for the left back position, with Thomas Vermaelen another option.
While those are suitable solutions for that position, neither has played a full EPL season. Gibbs has had his share of injury problems, and Traore has gone out on loan numerous times.
Hopefully, just as when Wenger let Ashley Cole leave and Clichy took over, these two can make a big impression.
Despite this, Wenger's main worries lie centrally. Both in the defense and defensive midfield departments.
Johan Djourou made some strides, and Vermaelen will be back in action, but there is need of at least two other solid options in that position to get through what will be another arduous season.
Koscielny was up and down throughout the season, and in his first season at Arsenal, he was a partner in the calamitous mistake in the Carling Cup final. He may have some promise and Wenger is likely to keep hold of him, but he cannot be counted upon game in and game out throughout the season.
Squillaci has to go. There is no need for explanation as to why the Frenchman has to depart the Emirates. The Gunners only had four center back options last season, and at least one more body is needed. Squillaci should not be that option.
There is still a significant amount of time left in the summer window, but Arsenal's movements so far have been slow.
The Gunners have been linked to various defenders, but it seems the price tag is getting in Wenger's way.
Again.
Arsene has always been willing to splash the cash, in Arsenal terms, on attacking talent. He needs to do this for defense this summer.
A proven goalkeeper would be a nice addition as well.
It is still not time to worry yet, but Gervinho alone cannot turn Arsenal's fortunes around.
