Kenny Dalglish has not got his wide man Marveaux
Last season hadn’t even been concluded, yet reports were edging towards a deal between Liverpool and Rennes winger Sylvain Marveaux.
It seemed destined that the highly rated former French under-21 wide man was heading to Anfield on a free transfer following an apparent pre-contract agreement. Marveaux was injured towards the later half of last season, which may have worried Liverpool regarding his tendency to remain fit on a regular basis.
While Liverpool never confirmed to such a deal, Marveaux was public in his claims that he was leaving Rennes in the summer, with his likely destination to be England. The suggestions that Marveaux was Liverpool bound persisted nonetheless, with his signing expected to be the club’s first even before Jordan Henderson’s deal from Sunderland was sealed.
The signing of Henderson may have provoked confusion amongst Reds fans who consider a winger to be a priority for next season, rather than another central midfielder to add to their ranks.
However, nothing materialised, as other options soon came to the fray. The likes of Aston Villa’s Stewart Downing and Ashley Young have been heavily linked. Liverpool have already been beaten to the signing of the latter by rivals Manchester United for around £20million.
Having lost Young, it seems unlikely Villa will be willing to part with Downing. With that in mind, Liverpool stepped up their attempts to bring Marveaux to Anfield, with the Frenchman undergoing a medical.
Next thing we’re aware of, Newcastle United have signed Marveaux on a free transfer for five years. Reports suggest that Marveaux failed a medical, whereas the winger dismissed these suggestions reiterating personal terms were not agreed upon.
Perhaps we may never know the real reason as to why Marveaux decided against Liverpool, favouring a move to Tyneside.
Nonetheless, another target of Liverpool’s has gone, with Young and Blackburn’s Phil Jones opting a move to Old Trafford. As mentioned, Downing has been heavily linked, and if reports are to be believed, he is likely to sign.
Although such reports suggested a move for Marveaux had already been completed, Wigan Athletic winger Charles N’Zogbia has been linked as has Valencia’s Mata, currently on international duty with Spain at the under-21 European Championships.
Barcelona Duo Jeffren Suarez, also in Denmark, and Ibrahim Afellay have been linked also, yet nothing concrete has been established.
With Liverpool continually tracking Blackpool’s Charlie Adam, they are yet to reach an agreement with the Seasiders following a succession of rejected bids for the Scottish International. Should a deal be signed in the near future, Liverpool would have yet signed a player to fill the void on either flank for next season, while building considerably in the middle of the park.
But Liverpool fans are if nothing but patient and will have faith in what Kenny Dalglish, along with Damien Comolli, are building at Anfield. They will trust in the reasons behind the successive attempts of bringing Marveaux to the club, as well as other alternatives that will be expected to arrive sooner rather than later.
