Liverpool FC : Top 5 Likely Targets for the January 2011 Transfer Window

0 of 5

Damien Comolli, the man in-charge of LIverpool's transfer windows seems to have his plans sorted out. After watching the Reds on field for a few occasions since his appointment and after his open confession of having talks with both Kenny Dalglish and Roy Hodgson, Comolli stated that he has sorted out the targets for the club and if a player was available at the correct price, NESV would go for the buy.

However, two key facts, Firstly he put forth was that the transfers would basically revolve around bring in the best British kids around and Secondly, the manager would have a major say in the decisions in the transfer windows.

Now although most fans consider that the immediate sacking of Roy Hodgson is the way to go about, unfortunately John W Henry, the principle owner of the club at least until now feels otherwise. He seems to have been floored by Liverpool's first half performance against Chelsea and even after the deplorable plight that followed, John seems to still consider that it will be Roy who would be staying around until then and thus have a major say in further signings.

Here is a list of players who the recent reports consider as Liverpool's main targets in the otherwise less valued winter window.

David Wheater. Age 23, Present Club: Middlesborough

Considered as one of the stars of the now Championship strugglers, Middlesborough, David Wheater is an able centre back although he can also chip in as a good right back too.

With a lot of speculation relating the future of both Daniel Agger and Glen Johnson, Wheater who has interested Hodgson for a long time now may be considered as a viable and cheap option, meeting both of Comolli's suggested criteria for signing.

On 15 October 2008, Wheater was called up into the England senior team as a replacement for John Terry when the England Captain withdrew due to an injury picked up playing for Chelsea. Wheater's first real taste of senior international football came when he was named as a substitute for the games against France & Trinidad and Tobago in 2008 but did not leave the bench on both occasions.

Wheater is 6ft 5 and has been at Middlesborough since 2004.

Adam Barton, Age = 19, Present Club = Preston North End

Although primarily a product of the Blackburn Rovers academy, this 5ft 11, central mid-fielder is considered to be a very promising English talent and has been scouted a number of times by Liverpool recently.

Barton was named in a Northern Ireland squad in September 2010, having previous been named to the under 21s team, qualifying for the country through his parents. However, he withdrew from the squad the day after its announcement rather than lose eligibility for the England National team by playing in a competitive international. On 12 November 2010, Barton was called up for the Northern Ireland friendly against Morocco after a number of withdrawals.

Again another player of English origin and from the lower division English clubs, Barton may just make his way straight away into the reserve team. However, his long term prospect at Liverpool should depend on his performances there onwards.

Yann M'Villa. Age 20, Present Club : Rennes (France)

Considered widely by many as one of the brightest prospects in France, Yann M'Villa hails from Rennes in France. A strong defensive mid-fielder, the only stumbling block in buying whom may be the price tag of 15m GBP the French Club puts on him. Recently, Asamoah Gyan was bought from the same French club by Premier league club, Sunderland for a hefty 13m GBP.

However, the seriousness showed by the club in pursuing him may well end up in a formidable vid for the player come January, 2011. The present Liverpool manager was recently reported to have watched the mid-fielder recently in action against Auxerre.

Antoine Griezmann, Age 19, Present Club : Real Sociedad

Scouted by even the likes of Arsenal and Manchester United, Antoine Griezmann has been considered as one of the most promising players of his age group in both Spain, where he plays club football and France whom he represents internationally.

He plays mainly as a left winger, but can also be utilized as a striker. Griezmann is known for his technical skill, quick acceleration, and dribbling and is a French youth international, having represented his country at under-19 and under-21 level. In 2010, he was part of the team that won the 2010 UEFA European Under-19 Football Championship on home soil.

However, there have also been unpleasant rumors in Liverpool surrounding the future of one its brightest young prospects, Dani Pacheco. The youngster was bought from the academy of Barcelona and has also attracted the likes of Real Sociedad among many others after being adjudged the man of the tournament in the the 2010 UEFA European Under-19 Football Championship. Thus although recent reports suggest a 7m bid could be in place to lure Antoine to Anfield, a swap of sorts also cannot be ruled out.

Lucas Barrios, Age 26, Present Club : Borussia Dortmund

Rumor has it that Liverpool FC are looking to swap the likes of either Ryan Babel or Milan Jovanovic plus cash for the Paraguayan International, Lucas Barrios .

Although the player is not exactly as young as the others rumored to be interesting Liverpool FC, Lucas Barrios is certainly the type of player that would interest Roy Hodgson. Barrios is known for his effectiveness in the target area. This earned him his nickname, La Pantera which means The Panther..

Barrios has been a key part of Dortmund's push for Champions League football for next season. His goals, especially his hattrick on April, 24th 2010 against FC Nurnberg helped his team win 3–2 and to secure a place in the Europa League the following season. It was this hattrick that has alerted Top clubs in Europe.

His first season in Germany ended with a goal on the final day of the season away at Freiburg, the goal meant Barrios finished 3rd in the Bundesliga top scorer of 2010 with 19 goals in 33 games.

Besides all this the player's excellent work ethic may make him a priority for Liverpool this upcoming transfer window.
