Manchester United or Chesea for the Title

Jeff HarbertAug 1, 2008

Manchester United and Chelsea battled it out up to the very last day of the Premier League season, before the Red Devils eventually secured their second-straight league title. The two clubs have been at the pinnacle of English football for the last couple of years and are once again considered strong favorites for the Premier League crown this year.

Owen Hargreaves, who won the league in his first season with United last year, believes it will once again be Manchester United and Chelsea that will be the most serious of contenders for the league title.

"I would be extremely happy if we can improve on last season, although it is going to be tough," he said.

"Chelsea have improved. Tottenham will be a good side. So will Liverpool, and Arsenal will be a threat, even though they have lost a few players. It is going to be a very exciting season in the Premier League, but I am sure ourselves and Chelsea will be the big two.”

With both teams looking as strong as ever, few would bet against it. Chelsea will be led by new manager Luiz Felipe Scolari and will also be bolstered by new signings Jose Bosingwa and Deco. The Portuguese pair should add a lot to an already top-quality side.

Manchester United haven’t been as active in the transfer market, but will have the same squad that won the League and European double last season, to once again contest for this year’s league title.

Owen Hargreaves is adamant that despite Chelsea’s strong potential this season, United will still be on top at the end of what promises to be another fantastic season in the Barclays Premier League.

"Cristiano Ronaldo is injured and Anderson will be away at the Olympics, so we will miss them early on, but apart from that the squad looks good.

"The group has been together for a year now, so we should improve, and I am looking forward to seeing us do just that. Gary Neville is back, which is important, and when you look at what Wayne Rooney has achieved, at just 22, I think he could be one of the most influential players in the Premier League this season."

Nonetheless, it will be interesting to see Hargreaves if is right and if it will once again be Manchester United and Chelsea who battle it out for the Premier League crown. And let’s not forget about Arsenal and Liverpool, who will both be desperate to finally have a solid season in the league in order to seize the title away from the clutches of reigning champions, Manchester United.
