Roy Hodgson has said that Fernando Torres told him that he will be staying at Liverpool next season.

Chelsea and Manchester City have been linked with big-money moves from £50-£70 million for the 26-year-old Spaniard.

He earned that price tag by smashing an incredible 56 goals in 79 games for the Reds.

Hodgson revealed he is currently winning the battle to keep the Spanish hitman at Anfield for at least another season.

"As far as I know, Fernando is looking forward to coming back here—he is back on Monday," the Liverpool boss said. "He is enjoying a holiday—a well-deserved break—as he has not had one for three years."

"He is spending a lot of time with his family, keeping a low profile and as far as I know, he is not really speaking to anyone. But he has told us that he is looking forward to Monday, looking forward to getting back to work, and looking forward to playing for Liverpool next season. That is what I know so other reports, I would suggest, are erroneous."

Bye Bye Mascherano

Hodgson also confirmed that Javier Mascherano has said he wants to quit Liverpool.

The Argentinian said he is keen to be reunited with the former Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez, who has taken over Inter Milan.

"Yes, he wants to leave the club. He has made that perfectly clear. I think he wanted to leave a year ago," Hodgson said. "He wants to leave now but he is contracted to Liverpool so whether he leaves or not will be our decision."

Liverpool may be on the way to losing one key player, but at least it looks like the main guy is staying with them.
