2010 FIFA World Cup: Football Association Will Keep England Coach Fabio Capello

Michael PodgerJul 2, 2010

Just hours ago it was confirmed by the English Football Association that Fabio Capello would remain as England's boss after a poor performance by England in the 2010 World Cup.

It was only just before the World Cup (at the time, interest from Inter Milan was high) that the Football Association took away a clause in Capello's contract which enabled him to leave for another club shortly after the World Cup. This immediately meant that the FA saw him as their future of England for the likes of the 2012 European Championships.

Many skeptics would argue, however, that the FA would not have had the money to sack Capello, as it would have cost around £7 million to dispense of the Italian's services—meaning Capello's continuation of management may have been financially motivated.

Others would say that the decision to keep on Capello could also have been seen as settling, with the biggest candidate for the job, Roy Hogson, accepting the Liverpool role yesterday on a three-year deal.

Some would also argue that the FA would not agree to the continuation of Capello if they didn't believe that he could offer them more and change what has gone wrong, before.

It is here that Capello told Sky Sports News that he would "look to introduce new players to give the team more energy."

This was important because many were critical of how the England team lacked energy.

It can now only be assumed that Capello will look to introduce players such as Michael Dawson, Theo Walcott, Gabriel Agbonlahor, Ashley Young and Jack Rodwell—all young, talented footballers in regular England action, as opposed to being occasional members of the squads.

Many also now will expect Capello to introduce Englishmen into higher positions within his back-room staff. This could mean introducing the likes of David Beckham into more of a coaching role.

These steps for someone like Beckham could be the first toward becoming a manager himself, perhaps of England in the future.

This would mean following in the footsteps of other former Internationals who have recently become involved (successfully) in management of their countries—such as the likes of Joachim Loew, Diego Maradona, and Dunga, all who had little managerial experience before taking on the burdens of International management.
