Joe Cole, Mark Schwarzer And?: Who Should Arsenal Target Next?

Callum D'SouzaJun 6, 2010

Rumours are viciously circling Arsenal claiming they are set to secure the services of Chelsea playmaker Joe Cole and Fulham goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer.

This comes off the back of a dismal season for the Gunners, which resulted in their fifthย consecutive season without a trophy.

This ensured manager Arsene Wenger vowed to sign quality players to shore up the weaker areas of the Arsenal play. Now it would seem he has done just that, if rumours are correct.

Arsenal's main area which was constantly criticized and bamboozled was the goalkeeper. First choice Manuel Almunia and deputy Lukasz Fabianski, conceded a host of errors betweenย each other throughout the season, costing Arsenal dearly.

The pair have struggled to prove themselves as consistent keepers, especially when a dominant side like Arsenal crave a quality keeper. Many fans and critics agree the shot stoppers are better suited to deputy roles.

But it is growing increasingly likely that Wenger will repair the keeping damage with the signature of Mark Schwarzer forย ยฃ3 million.

The Australian shot stopper has been a reliable presence in the Fulham goal for some seasons now, and at 37, Schwarzer is the perfect short-term replacement whilst Wenger truly comes to terms with his keeping woes.

The other rumours is that Arsenal are set to see off a number of top clubs and sign off contract Chelsea midfielder Joe Cole on a free transfer.

This would be aย sensationalย signing, as it would come at no cost and would enable a stronger, reliable Arsenal midfield.

The 28-year-old will increase depth in the Arsenal midfield and help mitigate the blow of Cesc Fabregas departure, if he leaves. The Englishman can play anywhere in the midfield as well as be utilized as a winger and second striker.

If these rumoursย materializeย and the respective deals are finalized in the coming days, then Wenger has done most of his homework with signing a striker, Marouane Chamakh, a midfielder, Joe Cole, and the much-needed keeper, Mark Schwarzer.

Furthermore, it will cost underย ยฃ5 million.

But Wenger could use more signings. Which raises the question, who is next for the Gunners?

The Frenchman is yet to shore up the defensive uncertainties. Defenders William Gallas, Mikael Silvestre, Philippe Senderos, and Sol Campbell are all off contract and are yet to finalize their futures.

This ensures Wenger needs at least two defensive signings to allow depth is evident in the Arsenal backline, especially with injuries occurring so frequently.ย

However, if these rumours are fictional, then it will provide greatย disappointmentย for the Arsenal faithful.

But if they are true, then the footballing world is looking at a stronger Arsenal.
