England's first Group C opponent, the USA, began their World Cup preparations with a humiliating defeat at home to the Czech Republic.

A number of defensive errors proved very costly as the Yanks were hammered in their first warm-up game, 4-2.

The Czechs failed to qualify for this summer's World Cup but still managed to pull a win out of the bag against the not-too-impressive Americans.

The Czechs have the likes of Chelsea keeper Petr Cech in tow, so they would have been expected to at least qualify for the finals.

England, who beat the Mexicans at home on Monday night, will be looking at this game with high hopes to emulate the scoreline.

The Americans meet England in their opening match of the World Cup on June 12.

USA over the years

The Americans have made eight World Cup appearances since their first in 1930. That was as the year of their best finish in the tournament, missing out on the final and coming third.

They are currently ranked 14th in the world, which is only six places behind England.

The USA finished atop their 2010 World Cup qualifying group, with six wins out of 10. However, these wins were against the likes of El Salvador, Trinidad and Tobago, Costa Rica, Honduras, and Mexico.

How will they do in the 2010 World Cup?

The United States have had good results in the past few years, claiming a victory at the 2007 Gold Cup, but the World Cup is a different level, and teams like England will be a challenge for them.

There is a chance of them progressing past the group stages, as the other teams in Group C are Algeria and Slovenia.

They still have two more warm-up games against Turkey and Australia before the England game, so they have time to sort out their team, formations, and tactics.

My prediction: England 2 - 0 USA.
