UEFA Champions League Final: Player Ratings

John Tilghman Correspondent IMay 22, 2010

Julio Cesar: 8.5 The Brazil No. 1 was not tested often, thanks to his brilliant back line, but was spectacular when called upon. He saved well with his feet from Muller just after the restart and was brilliant to deny Robben on 65 minutes with a flying one handed save. Sure handed when dealing with set pieces.

Maicon: 6
Did not push forward with the same effectiveness as he did in the first leg against Barcelona, but was solid at the back, although he did allow Altintop to get in a few decent crosses. Should have been charged a penalty in the first half with a blatant penalty.

Lucio: 8.5 The towering center back was at his best after being slidelined through injury during the Serie A stretch run. Completely stifled Olic.

Samuel: 9   The Argentine won every ball in the air and was always ready to make a vital block, including the stop that sparked the counter attack on Milito's second.

Chivu: 6 Did well against Robben, but did allow the Dutchmen to get past him a couple of times. New where he had help and used it expertly.

Cambiasso: 8 Fantastic as usual. Was brilliant in recovering the ball and helped smother Robben when needed. Had a goal line clearance as well.

Zanetti: 8 A captain's effort as usual from the Inter legend. Was strong in midfield, and then moved to leftback to help keep the shackles on Robben. Pushed his team forward on occasion

Eto'o: 7 Sacrficed himself for the team yet again. Although his goal numbers were not what they were in his Barcelona days, he was the epitome of teamwork and discipline that Mourinho demands from his team. A changed man who was deemed selfish at his old club, anything but at Inter.

Sneijder: 8 Linked up extremely well with Milito, including the pass that sprung the first goal. Always a threat from free kicks, not matter how far out he was. Should have scored after being put through by Milito but shot straight at Butt.

Pandev: 5.5 Fell over nearly every time he was touched. Did link up reasonably well with Milito and narly scored a goal, but his guided effort was denied by Butt.

Milito: 9.5 A perfect game from the Argentine. Won balls in the air and held it up so well. Played in his teammates and had two superb finishes. Man of the match.

Stankovic: 6.5 Came into the midfield and did a job sitting in front of the back four, getting in a few blocks.

Muntari: 5 Brought on to enforce the middle and did so well helping out on the left side, collapsing on Robber.

Materazzi: Not given enough time. Brought on in stoppage time.

Butt: 6 Helpless on Milito's two goals, falling for the Argentine's feints. Held Sneijder's free kicks well and saved well from Pandev.

Lahm: 5 Was surprisingly ineffective going forward. Was not tested much at the back and should have been able to over lap more down the right.

Van Buyten: 4 Completely embarrassed by Milito on his second goal and had a few more nervy moments.

Demichelis: 5 Beaten in the air, then completely out run by Milito on his first goal. Was comfortable with the ball at his feet, but the damage was done on 35 minutes.

Badstuber: 5 A poor game from the young German, who was not tested by Eto'o as much as one would have thought. Failed to deliver a cross of any consequence.

Van Bommel: 6 Helped recover the ball, but like the rest of his Bayern teammates he lacked ideas when facing wall of Nerazurri defenders. Had a few long range efforts that were never going to test Cesar

Sweinsteiger: 5 Had possession, but passed when he should have shot, and vice-versa. Has failed to take the step to becoming a world class attacking player most thought he would be after arriving on the scene at Euro 2004. Simply a holding midfielder now.

Altintop: 7 Surprisingly taken off for Klose. Linked up very well and created space for himself to whip balls into the area. One of the few Bayern players with any creativity. May have made a difference in the final half an hour had he been given a chance.

Robben: 7.5 Full of running and cunning, but was in need of support from his teammates. Got in a few decent balls and turned Chivu a few times early. Nearly scored a wonder goal after hour mark, but was denied by the brilliant Cesar.

Muller: 5 Should have scored after being put through right at the outset of the second half but shot straight at Cesar who denied the youngster with his feet. The stage was a bit too big for the 20-year-old.

Olic: 4 Completely anonymous before being subbed off. Will have nightmares about Samuel and Lucio.

Klose: 3 Came on as a substitute and did absolutely nothing.

Gomez: 3 Incredibly this man was once valued at over 30 million Euros. Not anymore.
