Juventus Uses Late Claudio Marchisio Penalty to Defeat PSG at 2017 ICC

Joseph ZuckerJul 26, 2017

Claudio Marchisio converted a penalty kick in the 89th minute to give Juventus a 3-2 victory over Paris Saint-Germain in a 2017 International Champions Cup match Wednesday night in Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida.

It was the second time Marchisio gave Juve the lead. He scored in the 62nd minute to put the Italian champions up 2-1 before Javier Pastore equalized in the 80th minute.

Dani Alves nearly tied the match immediately after Marchisio's penalty. The Brazilian defender hit a shot from outside the box that was headed for the top corner, but Carlo Pinsoglio made the save.

PSG players also agitated for a penalty in the third minute of injury time after Pastore was brought down in the 18-yard box. The referee waved play on, and that was the last action of the match. PSG's English-language Twitter account appeared to disagree with the referee's decision:

Paris Saint-Germain was only minutes away from a penalty shootout had the match finished tied at the end of full time.

Pastore headed in a cross from Layvin Kurzawa that had even the press box inside Hard Rock Stadium showing its admiration, according to Beyond The Pitch's Juan G. Arango:

Juventus never trailed in the match. Near the end of a first half in which PSG was arguably the stronger side, Gonzalo Higuian put Juventus ahead. The Argentine forward executed a perfect one-two with countryman Paulo Dybala, who delivered a perfect pass to set up the goal.

Juve's 1-0 lead lasted eight minutes into the second half before Goncalo Guedes equalized for Paris Saint-Germain. Angel Di Maria did the heavy lifting for the goal, eluding the Juventus defense long enough to find Guedes alone at the back post.

ESPN FC's David Amoyal is disappointed Di Maria plies his trade in France:

Juventus didn't have to wait long to go back ahead. Marchisio unleashed a left-footed shot from the edge of the 18-yard box that sailed past PSG goalkeeper Remy Descamps and under the crossbar.

Moise Kean supplied the assist for the goal, adding to what was a man-of-the-match performance from the 17-year-old Italian. He also drew the foul on PSG defender Presnel Kimpembe that led to Marchisio's penalty.

Amoyal liked what he saw from Kean:

Juventus will wrap up its International Championship Cup run with a match Sunday against Serie A rivals AS Roma. They have one more friendly after that against Tottenham Hotspur on Aug. 5 before facing Lazio for the Italian Supercoppa.

Wednesday's match draws the International Champions Cup to a close for Paris Saint-Germain.

PSG take on Ligue 1 champions Monaco Saturday for the Trophee des Champions. After that, the Parisian giants open their Ligue campaign against SC Amiens on Aug. 5.
